I had this big cake rack (about 16"x13") before we got our Casita. Since counter space is so much needed I thought it might work as a sink cover. Used it on a 8 day trip and it was just what I needed. It allows me to pour water down the drain without moving anything that I may have placed on top of the rack. Easy to store when not needed and hot pans have a place when I need to get them off the stove. At night it is placed on the sink again so my husband's breathing machine rest on it. We intend to replace the faucet with a bar faucet which will be higher and make it easier to get water. With the original faucet I had to use a cup or remove the rack so we added a bar sink today which is higher. I forgot to say the rack has 4 'feet' which fit down inside the sink and keeps it from sliding in any direction.

I'm with Ches! Really cleaver idea ... one we might have to "borrow."

The "stock" wooden sink cover that comes with new Casitas is heavy, awkward to store when not needed. Pam is always "shaking" the faucet prior to travel so that water doesn't drip onto the cover and run on the floor as we move down the road. She even puts a towel on the cover to catch the few drips.

Your idea would allow the water (albeit a little bit) to drip right into the sink.

Since imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, I have just paid you a great complement: I got one last night!

I do have a couple ideas for other 'counter top extenders,' but you solved one of the problems I've had. Needing just a tad of water when something was sitting there. Now I can have both.

Suz, where did you find the cake rack? The one I found wasn't as big as what Dene has. It wouldn't be as good a fit.

Charles, FWIW, I stow the sink cover on the floor when in transit, and I have a sponge in a flat little soap dish that catches any drip from the faucet. (pic to follow one day soon).

We also travel with a dishpan in our sink; it holds all of the stuff that normally sits on the countertop or in the wire shelves (dish soap, flea spray, simple green, the cup that holds our small hummingbird feeders, etc.; also the tea kettle which is almost always otherwise on the stove). This arrangement makes for easy set up/take down when we're arriving or departing a campsite.

Mary, I hate to admit it, but I actually bought two.

The first one I found was at Marshall's (the outet type store, not the big department store). It was stuck back with their clearance cooking stuff. Only paid a few dollars for it. It was chrome.

Few days later, I was at Linen 'n Things and they had a black one for $6.99.

Not sure what the difference was, but the black one fit my sink better. I don't think it had anything to do with the material, I think it had to do with the way the individual feet were bent Does that make sense?

I think any store with kitchen gadgets would have one.

Thanks, I'll check L&T. The one I found was 11 inches instead of 13 inches. Now that might actually have some benefit (could slide the odd dirty utensil down into the sink without lifting the rack) but it probably would also be less stable. So, I'd thought I'd just keep on looking...

Dene, I finally got my baking rack/sink cover! (I got the black one from L&T, thanks Suz!)

Here's a pic of it... and it also shows off my new bar faucet, which, by the way, works great!

Linen 'n Things for the rack and then drop by Sams for the umbrella. I've got to make a trip to Tulsa. :yep

At the price they were, I wish I had gotten another red one while I was at it.
