Hello all,

Dan of the "blank canvas" egg here. I have installed a small window A/C unit in the closet of my Scamp 16. First step was to drill a hole in the bottom of the A/C unit to let condensation drip out. I used epoxy to glue a brass nipple fitting about 1 inch long into the hole and then attaches a rubber hosw so that the water would drip out well below floor board. Also drilled a coresponding hole through the bottom of the closet floor.


Second step was to cut a hole in the front of the closet big enough for the A/C to go in. I used a jig saw and the same basic method that I used to cut out the holes for my window install (see "cutting holes in my egg". Now for the tricky part, getting the unit in to place without breaking loose the brass nipple which is sticking out the bottom. I slid a board under the A/C to hold up the bottom high enough to protect the nipple until I had it lined up over the hole. Once I had the unit in the bottom of the closet I had to create a divider to isolate the hot exhaust and not allow it to enter the intake vents on the side of the unit. I did this by cutting a square U shape out of plywood, Turning it upside down and sliding it onto the unit between the back and the intake vents on the sides. You can see how it goes over the top and down the side in this photo



I then attached a cap that isolated the hot exhaust from the top of the A/c as seen here.



As you can see in the picture I ran all of my electrical in to the bottom of the closet as well for easy access.

Next I cut out holes and installed vents to exhaust hot air and intake fresh air. I cut in 2 vents right behind the unit where the fan blows out the hot air and one vent above the unit for fresh air intake (this fresh air vent is visable in the photo above). Here is a photo of the vent configuration from the outside.



I taped some window screaning to the inside of the vents to keep out creepy crawlies.

The last step was to make a shelf inside the closet that divided the A/C area from the rest of the closet. This shelf is seen here.



Here is a look at the unit from the front after installation.



After I had it installed I fired it up and came into the house for about 30 minutes to let it do it's work and when I returned I opened the door to a nice cool blast of air and unfortunately a fallen ceiling liner ( see "Help the sky is falling"). Anyway there is my A/C install. By the way bought the A/C at Sam's for about $130.00. The plywood used was about $10.00 and the vents were $15.00 so a total of around $150.00 and some blood, sweat and tears (see "Help the sky is falling"). Next up the full size bed and bunk beds install. Bye for now, Dan

Ok Thanks Donna. Are you aware of a awning / screen room combo for a 13' Scamp? We have a Yorkshire Terrier that will be traveling with us and one will be a necessity.

Camping World carries the line. The rub, is if they make one (screen room) small enough for a 13 footer. I know they do for the 16 footers and up.

BUT, neither is inexpensive. Have you considered a twist room??

Hopefully someone with a 13 footer who has done both will jump in and give you a definative answer
