Practical Sailor reviewed eight different fiberglass restorers in 1998, including Vertglas. The link to this (on the Poli Glow website) is
here. Of these, for the do-it-yourselfer, Poli Glow got the highest marks for initial shine. Has anyone tried it?

I have used it and it WORKS better tahn any other product. It is not a WAX but a recoating on your gel-coat. I met the owner of this comapny at the Tampa RV show last year nice guy - great product! But you have to have a place out of direct sun to work with the stuff.

I put some Poli Glow , only on the Scamp Ft. window cover.

Kevin,
Do you have any areas on your trailer that are a little problematic like discolorations or other blemishing of the gel-coat? I'd love to see before and after shots of those areas. So far I'm really impressed!

Thanks Paul for your feedback!

It looks like it works great. I might try it. How long does it take to dry that it has to be out of direct sun? Are there fumes; could I do it in the garage?
Bobbie

Oct 7 2007, 11:52 AM
No fumes but wear rubber gloves. Do small areas because it drys very fast. Yes you could do this in side your garage. There is NO sun shine here today and looks like rain any minuate. Takes about 1 minuate to dry each coat.
This photo is the 3rd coat
http://i67.photobucket.com/albums/h296/imp...3/cover3001.jpg This will be the last coat on the window cover.
For once a product works like they said it should. I'am very happy with the results. The 13' Scamp should look like new when done.

No argument on how good your gravel shield looks after 3 coats. However, FYI from the Scamp Owner's Manual:
Exterior Fiberglass:
Scamp trailers are built using an FRP open mold process. FRP stands for fiberglass reinforced resin. The exterior paint is called Gelcoat. It is a resin with pigment added. The Gelcoat bonds chemically to the FRP structure and becomes part of the supporting structure of the trailer. The pigments in the Gelcoat can be gradually broken down by sunlight. Over the course of time sun causes the Gelcoat to change, either yellowing to oxidizing. Waxing the trailer, covering it, or storing inside greatly reduces this process. Wax that works well on fiberglass products can be purchased at any boat dealer or many auto parts stores. If Gelcoat becomes chalky looking over time buff the chalkiness out using fine rubbing compound.
Don't work too hard! L 'n D

I finished the Poli Glow on the Scamp . I put 4 coats on and used about 11 oz of the 32 oz jug. This stuff goes on easy and looks GREAT. The first 2 coats you can hardly see, but the last 2 really make it shine. This product gets a A+ in my book.

Curious to see how well it holds up. How long do you think it took you to do all four coats? After the initial four coats, is it a once a year, one coat kind of product?
Kevin K
Oct 9 2007, 11:03 AM
They give you a special soap and a scrub brush to use on the trailer to get all the junk off.. That took about 1 1/2 HRS. Then you let it air dry. I pulled it in my garage to put on the 4 coats because you don't want any dirt getting into the clear sealer. Also DO NOT put Poli Glow on in direct sunlight , it will dry to fast and have streaks. Wait for a cloudy day. The final 4 coats took about 2 HRS to do. It drys very fast in about 1 minuate. I have enough left over to recoat once a year for the next 8 years ( They recommend once a year). Only takes about 2 1/2 oz to do a 13' Scamp 1 coat

Now that you are adept at applying the Poli Glow, could you maybe come up to Sonora, CA........I've got a little 13 footer that could use some attention.

So, someone that has applied Verglas how does what Kevin is going thru compare to applying Vertglas?
Price seems just a bit cheaper than Vertglas, but not a lot.
Do you need four coats with Vertglas?
Ease of Application of Vertglas?
How often do you need to reapply Vertglas?
Anything else?
Maybe, comparison photos of Vertglas application so we can see the difference?

I used navel jelly for the bad rust stains. (Works GREAT, leave on for 20 minuates then wash off) The Poli Glow prep soap and scrub pad will take out a lot of the other stains. I will have to wait and see how the Poli Glow holds up after a few years.
I wonder if I could put a good coat of wax on top of the Poli Glow , to protect the fiberglass better?

But think how well the lawn has been fertilized!
I haven't used the Borax on the trailer, but do use it to keep the ants down from around the house foundation... multiple uses for the same item. I love it!

Donna, yet ANOTHER use for the miracle Borax. My parents used it on their Christmas trees as a fire retardent. (We have an artificial tree.) My mother used to spray a mixture all over the tree and let it dry before bringing it into the house. Then after it had been up for while, she would break off a small twig in the back and try to light it with a lighter or match. When it stopped putting the match out, she knew it was time to take the tree down. I don't know what the mixture was except that it used Borax. They applied it with the sprayer from their Electrolux vacuum cleaner.

Come to think of it, I think it was a mixture of Borax and Boric Acid...
Here are some more uses:
http://www.ehow.com/how_2123273_use-borax-around-house.htmlAlthough another website says do not use with acid like this site says in No. 2. (Lemon juice is acidic)
http://www.ehow.com/how_2123273_use-borax-around-house.htmlI guess just try a little. The only thing I know not to mix is ammonia and bleach - it will generate chlorine gas.

Hi. I live in Orange County too and purchased my Poli-glow online from Defender Industries. Poli-glow is pretty expensive but it appears they have the lowest price online. I can't recall how much the shipping was, however. Here's their website:
http://www.defender.com/product.jsp?path=-...1&id=197398You can also just Google "poli-glow" and you'll get the price comparisons. Good luck.

I would suggest reading the comments on this thread before going through with a poli glow application:
http://www.fiberglassrv.com/board/index.ph...st&p=293854Just make sure it is what you want to do to your exterior - I have seen what happens to it after a few years and it is difficult to remove... just an FYI...

Actually I've found acetone to be really easy to work with in a vented space. Only problem is it's extremely volatile so you go through a can fairly quick. But it sure takes out a variety of stains and leaves no residue.

On fiberglass boats with stains in the gel coat, Oxyalic acid will take out rust and tanic stains. Oxyalic acid is a white powder to mix with water, available at many hardware stores. The fiberglass must be cleaned of oils, grease, and waxes before the acid wash. This is a mild acid and we have no trouble with skin contact (but will sting cuts). It will also take rust stains out of clothing. --Dan--

I used TSP to wash my trailer initially (first summer.) I don't think it would remove PoliGlo and it did not do as good a job of cleaning as the PoliGlo prep solution did (second summer.)
PoliGlo was definitely easier to use than it sounds like (the number of coats sounds like a lot but it goes on so fast that isn't an issue.)

I poli-glowed my trailer this year and DO NOT regret it one bit! I've been told several times by other campers that my trailer looks like new. They're surprised to learn it's 24 years old!
We decided to keep it at a private campground this season. It sits under pine trees. This past weekend I washed it for the first time since placing there mid-May. I used car wash soap and a car brush and all the crud from the trees easily came right off.
I swear by this stuff!!

Carolyn, I have a couple questions how long did it take for the first cleaning? Also how long did it take to apply the first coat & are multiple coats able to be applied on the same day. I have purchased the kit & the next time we are out we are thinking of doing it then. I'm looking forward to doing it & seeing the results of our hard work.
