Here is a lightweight refrigerator we are putting in out 13" Boler. It runs on 12v and we tried it out in the house. At 80 degrees inside the house the cooler temp with and without food ran at 32 degrees. Minimal heat produced but needs room for fans to vent under cabinet. IGLOO KOOL MATE 56 DUAL POWER COOLER is the make and model. We chose this as opposed to a refrigerator because of the major weight difference when compared to 2 way or 3 way refrigerators that are available today and because of the depth that the cabinet will allow without the face standing out into the room.

I have a couple of thermoelectric coolers, and I have found them to be only marginally effective in warmer temperatures. This one is maintaining a 48 degree F difference, which is impressive, but it will not be able to do that when the door is opened frequently, and in hot summer weather even that won't be enough.

My other concern is power draw. I was surprised to see how much current they use (mine are about 5 amps), especially compared to the high-efficiency 12VDC compressor-type units.

They are light and simple, and much less expensive than some alternatives.

I purchased mine new off of eBay for around $75 shipping $20. It sounds very quiet escecially when places under the cabinet. As for power draw, we were looking for a refrigerator that we could use only when we are hooked to power in camp. Frozen water bottles or ice can be used when we are camping without electric. In the past 10 years we have not done any camping where we didnt have electric hook up so we will be ok. Someone that does a lot of dry camping would be able to use it as a cooler but there is no outlet for ice melt.
I must admit that the price and weight along with the storage area inside were the appeal for me.

So, is there a particular reason (size?) that you chose this particular refer rather than a dorm style?

I can vouch for it being very quiet.
Something similar to this is what i used in my Compact Jr. When on the road, we'd transfer the unit to the van and plug it into a 12 volt outlet. When we stopped at a campsite, we'd transfer the unit back into it's spot in the trailer and plug it into 110 volts.

We actually had this before the trailer, and would use it in our tent.

Most of the refrigerators inc. dorm style run around $3-4 hundred and weigh much more then the Igloo we purchased. Also, the replacement parts are very reasonable and we do not have to worry about Freon or anything that needs special handling or disposal. The refrigerator that came with out trailer didnt work so we removed it. The hardest thing to find was a refrigerator that would fit within the 20" space we have in the cabinet. I didnt like how the old one stuck out into the room from the counter. The only thing now that sticks out into the room is the very front of the door to allow you to open the door with the inset handle on the unit.

Pictures will follow soon of our installation. We also will be looking into solar charging our batteries later and will be able to run the refrigerator even in dry camp. That is a bit further in the future though.

I was thinking more along the lines of the <$100 dorm-style refrigerator from WallyWorld.

I went with a slightly larger unit for the toy-box-to-be. I think it was on the order of $130-$150 or so (bought it some time ago now...). I'll run it on 120 when available and use it as a fancy icebox (ie with ice frozen in a 2L pop bottle or two) when it's not.

Course, if you're thinking of the LP/12V/120V units - yeah... they're pretty pricy!
