Yesterday we received, and put up, our new Kelty deluxe carport. I think it will work great! banana.gif It's pricey, but hopefully worth it. It goes up quickly, and attaches to the two hooks on the roof of our '76 Scamp. (Does everyone have these hooks?).
I like the fact that it can be used as an awning, and a lean-to type shelter in case of rain.
MountainSports.com has good photos, as does REI.com.
We got ours through Costco.com, using a friends membership number.
No pictures yet, still planning our first campout.

aplas.gif I don't think I have those hooks, but I have really thought about how that would work. Good to know that someone has gotten one and can give a first hand report.

Thanks for the tip. I've been trying to figure out how to get an awning without adding a ton of weight... this seems to fit the bill. I found them at bentgear.com, for a little over $100 less than rei, and it seems to be the same, newer version. (Older versions are availabe for less $, but seem less versitile.)

We'll see when it gets here, but I'm excited to try it out!

Thanks again, Colin

I have been thinking about using the rain fly for my current tent as an awning (it would be very similar to that but I'd have to get some poles to stand it in the upright position.)

I also checked out Bentgear, because of the good price. I decided to go with Costco. because if I didn't like it I could return it to a nearby store, instead of repacking it for shipment.
I did speak to a sales rep. from Bentgear, and he was very nice.

Someone on the yahoo T@B thread uses the Kelty. They have pictures of it used at the back of the clamshell and a picture of it over the door on the side.

They do not attach it to anything from what I can see. They use a foam piece (like that around water pipes) to rest against the T@B.

Do keep us updated on how this goes. Your being able to attach it to something should really help. I have just about ordered one several times and then wonder how it would really work, then the price stops me.

Thanks for the suggestions on where to buy cheaper.

Yes, but that's a really poor picture. Check out the pics. on the other websites I mentioned. Even the Kelty site doesn't have good pictures.... OH.gif

It seems to me that it has to be attached to something at the top, otherwise it won't stay up. Unless they have ropes attached to the top pole of the awning going over the top of the trailer (or whatever...not sure what a T&B is confuse.gif ) and tied down on the other side.

T@B RV an expensive, heavy sticky (IMO).

Marjie, Did you get the Delux Large, so you have the extra poles. I really can't see the difference between the large and delux large other than those extra poles to give one more options. I liked the information and pictures on mountainsports.com site, but am still a bit confused on the difference between the large and delux large. One did say "pressfit poles" while the other said "alum poles". Perhaps the delux has a place to attach the extra poles to make it into an awning?

Careful people. There are different size Kelty Carports.

The T@B is the large teardrop that is not fiberglass. I would need to go back to their pictures but I really do think they just rested the Kelty on the roof of the Tab. The Kelty was not used as an awning with the extra poles, it was used as a covered entry so was probably anchored to the ground. They may have tied it down somehow when they attached it to the back hatch kitchen.

OK everyone, go out and buy one and post pictures and tell me how to use one without having to attach something to the Scamp. I have thought about the rope over the Scamp but figure that would cause rub marks on the roof. Use more of those foam pipe things?

I do really like the light weight part of this system.

I think it was over on the Casita forum they were recommending this screen room

Looks like it would work really well. Anyone got any experience with one of these? ask.gif

Hi,
As far as I can tell, the Deluxe has sides that come down, with windows. I like the sides, because it ALWAYS seems to rain when we camp!
38.gif. It also has the ability to become an awning....the other one may also become an awning, but not sure. There is a medium and large size deluxe, I got the large one. Most of the web sites I visited seem to carry only the large.

Thanks Marjie.

I went back to the T@B web site to look at the pictures again. They do have it tied somehow to the back hatch when using as a kitchen shelter. I could not see what they did when they put it on the side over the entry door as there was snow on the roof and it was not obvious if it was somehow tied down. But with their curved roof it seems it would be even better with our fiberglass units.

Really glad you have something to hook it to on your rig Marjie. Makes life a lot easier if one wants to use this as an awning and not just a shelter.

Be sure to give us updates.
