If there is enough interest in a Dutch Oven Cooking Workshop at the Gathering, Mike and I will be happy to facilitate it again. It will be open to anyone, from first time Dutch Oven cooks to experienced cooks that would like to learn something new.

Please let us know in this thread if you are interested and I'll get it going.

I've got a Lodge 12 Camp, and a Lodge 8 Camp. I haven't decided yet if I'll cart the 8 with, but 12's coming for sure.

This is a fun workshop. Lori and Mike do a great job of presenting and coaching.

For size, there are two good choices, but whatever you buy, try to get quality cast iron. We like Lodge Manufacturing. http://www.lodgemfg.com/ We find our local Ace Hardware sells Lodge and often has discount prices.

The most versatile all around Dutch Oven seems to be the standard 12” Camp Dutch Oven.

That said, we have found that the 10” Camp Dutch oven is much lighter and is a great size for two people.

Now, we have figured out a great way to create a hybrid Combination that gives even better versatility for two people.
Click to view attachment Click to view attachment
We buy the 10’ Kitchen style Dutch Oven (no legs and dome lid) and an Extra Lid that is the 10” Camp Lid. With this combination, you can use the Dutch Oven at home in your standard Kitchen Oven or you can switch Lids and cook with coals on a camp out. Perfect size for two people.
(all I could find is 12” photos, but the 10” looks the same)

Here are their catalog numbers.
10” Camp Dutch Oven
10CO2A - Camp Dutch Oven, 4 qt., 10" dia., Depth: 3-1/2"

12” Camp Dutch Oven
12CO2A - Camp Dutch Oven, 6 qt., 12" dia., Depth: 3-3/4"

10” Kitchen Dutch Oven Lodge Original Finish
8DO2A - Dutch Oven with Iron Cover, 10-1/4", dia., Depth: 4", 5 qt.

10” Camp Lid only
10CL2 - Camp Dutch Oven Iron Cover, 10" dia.

We have Recipes for both 10” and 12” Dutch Ovens. We will base your recipe on your level of experience and size of Dutch Oven.

I hope this helps. Please ask if you have any more questions.

Mike,
I have a 8" Lodge, 10" Camp Chef, 12" standard Lodge, and 12" deep made in China no name. However, I don't plan on hauling all that cast iron from Texas to Oregon. I'll bring the 12" Lodge. ask.gif What would you like me to prepare?

Hi Tom,

Did you get my PM? See if you can review and reply.

Please stay tuned...
We will develop a plan when we see who are coming and how many.
Mike Sanders
I should say, if you already have a camp dutch oven, it will work fine.

My purchasing comments are for those purchasing new. You will be glad you bought great quality because they last forever.

Hi Lori and Mike!

Hi Mike and Lori!

We very much enjoyed the dutch oven class last year and would like to do it again. We also have added a different lid that will hold briquettes to our oven.

Thanks

Jim and Mary,

We're glad you enjoyed last year and we're happy to have you join us again. Did you get a new dutch oven? If I remember correctly, you have an older #8 kitchen style? Did you find a camp lid?

I have some new recipes to add to my tried and true.

How about if I do the Onion casserole in one and try something new and different in the second one!!! I'm open for anything!!

At least one of us would love to come to the class. I know we have a dutch oven somewhere but we have been so busy with the move, I couldn't tell you where to look to see what size, kind or make. I don't think it has a flat lid but we will find something by the campout, I hope. Moving is so much fun.

Hi Lori and Mike,
Don't know if it's a #8, but it took a #10 Lodge lid. Does this mean it is a #10? It's the same old kettle without legs. We're still cooking with it. Right now we're looking around for a desert receipe.

Just let us know the time and place, and we'll be there.

Please count me in!

I have a cast iron Dutch oven (kitchen style), but will check to see if I can add the 10" camp lid to it. What a great idea!! For those of you who are looking to buy a Dutch oven, I recommend looking first at your local Goodwill or other thrift store. I found a wonderful cast iron skillet as well as my Dutch oven there. Both just needed a good cleaning and re-seasoning, and they turned out better than new, I think. Cheap, too!

I am a newbie to Dutch oven cooking while at camp, so I'll be taking lots of notes. I'd like to try making cornbread, if you think that's appropriate for a newbie.

Looking forward to it!

Lori has a terrific Corn Bread recipe. Oh man, that with honey butter, YUM! I’ll let Lori get back to you about who does what, but it shouldn’t be a problem.

You will definitely want to get a camp lid that fits. Turns a Pot into an Oven for outdoor cooking.

The Dutch Oven workshop will be Saturday afternoon, starting at 2:00pm. We'll be discussing equipment, tools, fuel, tips and techniques, followed by a hands-on making of a separate recipe for each Dutch Oven. The food should be ready about 5:00, at which time we'll enjoy a sampling of all that you have cooked.

We will contact each of you who sign up to match you up with a recipe that fits your experience and interest. You'll bring your Dutch Oven, the ingredients for your recipe, some charcoal, and be ready to have a good time. If you don't have a Dutch Oven, and want to participate, you may be able to borrow one for the class.

Each year we have first time Dutch Oven cooks as well as very experienced cooks. We even have those who just want to "watch" from the sidelines, and find themselves joining in on the fun.

If you've taken our class before, and want to join in again, we'd love to have you.

If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to ask.

I will plan to be there on Saturday at 2:00 PM! Where will we meet?

I've just ordered the Lodge 12" camp Dutch oven from my local True Value store for $55 -which is lower than the price at Amazon.com! I figured the chances of finding a tight-fitting lid for my off-brand 10" kitchen Dutch oven would be small, so I'll make the investment. The things I will do for fresh cornbread while camping. 61.gif

Looking forward to this workshop. Thanks for organizing it, Lori and Mike!

Hi Mike and Lori,

Count Dennis and me in for the workshop, too. It sounds like too much fun to miss! We'll have a smaller 10' dutch oven and probably should be considered on the novice side since it has been a few years since we've done that. In the past, we have used dutch ovens on river trips to make lasagne/cakes/beans or other various dishes.

Let us know what you'd like us to bring.

OK Charlene... I just can't resist... you'll have a smaller 10', as in 10-FOOT, dutch oven?

It's a good thing you and Dennis have a 17' WIDE BURRO (which Dennis described in a previous thread) to carry it in! roflol.gif

I sure hope Lori and Mike have lots of space at their site, and you better bring LOTS of charcoal!!! roflol.gif

Nancy,

Why don't I bring a Dutch Oven for you to use? I'll give you a recipe and you can bring the ingredients. It's more fun to get in a play than to watch.

Hi Mike and Lori --

I've just talked my husband, Bob, into joining us for the workshop... I've ordered a lid stand so that we can use the kitchen Dutch oven in addition to the 12" camp Dutch oven I just bought. He would like to make a vegetarian bean dish (to go with my cornbread), so if you have any recipe suggestions, let us know!

PS - Please don't tell him that I have ulterior motives.... I figured that once he learns how to cook with a Dutch oven, HE can be the chief cook when we are out camping! 94.gif

Thanks!

If I can still get on "The List" just tell me what to bring.

Thanks,
