The factory battery wires are very stiff and after sliding battery out of the side compartment on trailer just once I had broken strands so I mounted an isolator block and ran soft 8 gauge boat cables to battery with shrink wrap and made them long enough so battery can now reach the ground to check water level. I found this mod on another forum

What a cool idea!
In addition to solving the problems you outline above, it also solves the problem of having a black wire and white wire at the battery (and hooking them up backward...), changing them to the automotive standard of red and black.

Shane-
I'd like to try this mod on our Casita. Where did you find the isolator block?

Just a suggestion, it might be a good time to install a fuse to the battery at the same time.

I did a similar mod in my Fiber Stream. I used a fuse block instead of an isolator block, and it makes a good connection point for the solar charge controller.

For those who want a flexible cable, welding cable is very good because it is made up of a large number of small strands. Not cheap.
Contrary to conventional wisdom, it has no extra current carrying capacity in DC use.
