My trip up to Aguirre Spring on my XT250 Yamaha. It has been a while since I have been up to the area and I wanted to see how it is since I had listed it on the Forum as a neat place to camp. It is BLM Campground near Las Cruces and is still a very nice campground. The high wall, needle-like spires of the Organ Mountains curve dramatically around a semicircle of Chihuahuan Desert habitat at the Aguirre Spring Campground. The campground, nestled at the base of spectacular cliffs, overlooks the Tularosa Basin and White Sands National Monument. Alligator juniper, gray oak, mountain mahogany and sotol are a few of the abundant plant species here. Seasonal springs and streams occur in the canyon bottoms, with a few perennial springs that support riparian habitats.

There was only one B-class RV in the upper campground and one jeep camping (maybe in a tent) in the lower campground when I was there. I finally made the ride from home to Aguirre Spring Campground, put about 52 miles on the bike doing it. Temps about 63 degrees at the start, cooler on the mountain, and later. I had a Great time doing it. I had wanted to do a few days camping up there before I winterized the Scamp, but just didn't take the time to do so. As the sign at the start warns it is a winding, steep road, but for our Eggs it would not be a bad drive. The steep winding section is a one way nicely paved road in good shape up and down. There is water down by the Host's Tailer at the start of the BLM land, mid-way to the steep one way section, just before the gate. At times the gate is locked, but one can leave at anytime.

Edit: It worked. As the sign says, it is a steep and winding road up to the campground but a good smooth road, ideal for an Egg!

We have camped there as well (fall 2007). It was a good place to camp, there was excellent hiking right there, and a good base for exploring. The road was not a problem. The roads close fairly early in the evening, but if you check out with the guy down by the gate he will leave it unlocked. Never stayed before in a campground that locked things up at night.

Anyway, we enjoyed our stay there. New Mexico is wonderful for fall camping since most everything is closed in Colorado with the snow. Aguirre Springs is a lot nicer than staying in a parking lot in Las Cruces.
