I'm making new roof supports from some Tiki torches I found at Lowes.

This is one of the new supports:

And this is what the old ones look like:

I stole the "cage" section of some Lowes Tiki torches and welded them to a new base plate. My first welding project!

I made careful measurements before removing the old supports, which was a good thing: the two verticals are slightly different lengths. (The back one is almost 1/4" longer!)

And there is the new counter top! It's Formica laminate on top of some 1/4" birch plywood with some trim I concocted. Using 1/4" birch ply kept the weight for the new counter way down.

I got some single flatware drawer trays from Target or Wally and cable-tied them between the two Scamp supports so they were doing double duty. I put my often-used stuf, like spoons, pocket knife, pens, etc., in the trays -- I can reach them while standing or in my bed across the back.

Leave it to Peter (and Lynn) to come up with something so totally cool. I'd look at Tiki torches and say.. humm don't need 'em. Peter looks at them and thinks outside the box!

Now, aren't you guys glad you bought an old trailer to spiff up roflol.gif AND, I am being facetious!

I LOVE the look of the new supports.

Now.... how can we integrate some LED lighting into them. winky.gif (just kidding ... I think)

LOVE IT! NICE WORK! Those new supports are sure nicer looking than the old ones. I love your origionality. Wonder what other ideas you have, Hmmmmmmm :-)

Really nice! 94.gif What an improvement! I love to see creative new ideas like this.

Very nice! I like how you balanced the ornate windings of the torches by turning one up and one down. The wood bullnose is nice on the countertops, too. I've done the same thing in home kitchens & baths to cut down on weight of material with solid surface material.

Hi Peter & Lynn! Wow, what a terrific idea. We have wondered now & again about changing the boring factory supports in our Scamp 13, but never got further than thinking about it. Like Donna, I'd have scooted right by the Tiki torch sections with nary a thought to use them differently. New counter upgrade is super too. We continue to be inspired by your creativity. Thanx for posting. Take care, L 'n D

Our Boler did not come with cabinet supports. I have been contemplating adding something. I really like what you have done.

now that you say that... a flame shaped light bulb, lite up in side those cages would really look good.

or better yet.. just mount a small candle in there.. you know the kind that sits in a little metal can. or even a minature wick Tiki small can with wick out the top.

(Chuckle) Y'know I have seen little tea-candle-sized LED flicker lights for haloween pumpkins and the like . . . h50.gif

Peter, I love the inventiveness of all you've done. Those look really nice, I've admired those tiki torches at Lowes before.

You're gonna have to fix that, you know.... winky.gif

Nice refit there Peter, MUCH better then the original. smil.gif
You could likely go to many hardware stores, or Stair and Railing shops, and get some metal spindles too.

I looked at the stair spindles at Home Depot. They cost less than the tiki torches and have a similar cage-looking section in the middle, but their main shaft is twisted square stock, and I preferred the look of the round shaft of the Tiki Torches. The spindles from the specialty stores would have worked, but cost more than $10 each tiki torches.

Just finished the curb/sink-side counter and upper cabinet support. We upgraded our sink to a double-bowl unit, something Lynne's wanted for a long time!

Very pretty!

The only thing I'd wonder is if the open design might bend in it's "support" role. I don't know what sort of pressure they can take vs what sort of load that part really takes though.

Just no denying it looks much better than the original twisted stock look.

The main thing the supports do right now is hold the weight of the cabinets up and stop the shell from sagging . . . that's not much weight at all. The only other thing that the supports might have to bear is the weight of a rooftop A/C (under 100 lbs), but that additional weight is borne by both the cabinet/roof supports and the floor-to-ceiling bathroom enclosure and opposing curb-side cabinet.

All-in-all there's just not a lot of weight those supports need to worry about. My cute little replacements will do the job and prevent the roof will sag and stress cracking that occurs when they've been removed.

So there I was, just minding my own business and doing my grocery shopping when I came across these little LED tea candles for just $0.50 each. I couldn't help but think of Carol Ann and her request . . .

OMG! Talk about ambiance. Now the Pina Coladas ...

Time for my input.

I'm not sure about the size, but I can see something like the round spiral spring in a golf ball retreiver show below

Painted flat black and set into the bottom of the tiki torch to hold the LED tea candles straight in position.

Roy in TO
Or since Peter welded this as a project, just a round ring tacked into position to hold the tea light.
