Anyone know where I can buy canned bacon ? The stuff was great no need to keep cool just pop fry and enjoy . thanks
Donna D.
Oh I hope someone answers. I usually buy Hormel Microwave bacon. It's a quick cook in the micro and doesn't make a mess. Hormel Microwave Bacon. One of my favorite sandwiches is a B-L-T and this is just the ticket!

On edit: Just Googled... here's a whole case/ 12 cans: Yoder's Canned Bacon

I just bought a can for my trip from these guys in Texas

I use the Hormel stuff too, at home and in trailer. MUCH nicer than buying a slab and throwing most if it away. I eat enough that I don't have to worry about the expiration dates, but with fresh, I don't eat enough to not throw away a bunch of it.

And.. there is no cooking mess!

Gee...I've never heard the term "bacon" & "throw away" together ever in my life. Ah yes bacon...my clogged arteries sing it's praises. tongue.gif

This is not raw bacon. It is pre-cooked bacon just like any other pre-cooked bacon. It has about a ten year shelf life which is far greater than the Hormel you buy in the supermarket.
After you open it you refrigerate it.

I agree BLT in the morning with an egg thrown in maybe a slice of cheese, a BLT for lunch, then beans and hebrew nationals for supper, but ya gotta be camping cause it just smells better then

Ron,
How's the taste of the canned bacon compared to real bacon? I've bought the shelf-stable, half-cooked Hormel, and it's ok, not great. Big advantage is less grease.
Curious.

Compared to Oscar Mayer center cut lean which is shorter, thinner, and is baked on a rack in the oven very slow, this canned bacon loses. But its pretty much like the pre-cooked you buy in the deli packs I think.

My only problem with it is there are 40-50 slices in a can and I have no idea what the keeper life is after its opened.

Freeze the leftovers in portion control ziplocs. Then, in a sealed ziploc (or three or four), you have six months to a year life, at leas in the freezer. With so much fat content, even thaw/refreeze doesn't affect the taste that much.
It will last a month or two in the refrigerator.

Even without added preservatives, bacon has so much salt it lasts a month or more without cooking in the refrigerator. (I try not to think about that salt 77.gif Grew up on a farm, and I do love bacon....

Hi,
WAY back in the late 60s, there was a canned bacon , 'Krown' Brand, IIRC that was easily available here in Canada. It was from one of the Scandanavian Countries - I think Sweden!
Wrapped in paper it was great - although salty.
The BIG NEAT thing was that it fried up FLAT!
Uncanned, unwrapped, it seemed to last a long time, even without refirigeration!
Hmmm! I wonder why? Maybe some Sulphites, Sulphates, and other, now banned, preservatives!
But back then, not Hmmm! it was Ummmmmmm!
Also, we used to go camping with a 7 lb salami (Chicago 58!) for the week! We hung it from the tent pole!
Breakfasts were salami and eggs!
Lunch was salami sandwiches with cheese on rye!
Supper was spaghetti, stew, or other, with, what else, cubed salami!
You had to put a can under it, as it 'wept' fat!
Never went bad though!
Cold beer was a breakfast for wimps - Room temp at all times!
We NEVER had a cooler or used ice!
NOW, they WARN you to refrigerate eggs!
I, myself, must be WAY beyond my 'best before' date!
Even boating, I found that things are 'good' for a long time, IF you are clean, careful, and meticulous!
Don't throw out your cans the day after they 'expire'!
Use common sense!
Always, USE COMMON SENSE!
Sorry to go OT!

the canned stuff sounds good, but the appeal to me on the ready made stuff is that it leaves no mess. A little slick in the pan, but nothing like bacon grease.. and it "Cooks" in about a minute. I can toss it into my eggs and cook all at once without doing the bacon, setting aside and then doing the eggs in the same pan.

I often use the Hormel precooked bacon when I am on the road and want a little extra protein for breakfast. Particularly, if I am rolling out before dawn. Can't beat the real stuff though when you have time to cook. Save the bacon grease for flavouring vegetables. Good old country cooking -Yuuuum! (Don't tell my Cardiologist.)
Time to order a couple of cans of "Yoder's" to have on hand.
Terry R.
We used to buy DAK bacon in the can at K-marts and have not seen it for years. When I tried to find it on the internet. We used to put it all in a bowl and rinse it then peel the pieces apart and fry it. It was great when we were tent camping and refridgeration was at a minimum.

Glad to know about the Yoder option. We should be able to find some in Amish country. Thanks. Terry R

The bacon hangs, like on a clothes line, and the grease drips off as it cooks.

This is a little different then the one I remember...

Yep that's it

I don't get the canned bacon thing, unless it's a storage issue and there are no stores around.

Don't feel bad Donna I never geard of canned bacon until now.

The subject of canned bacon brings back memories of camping with my father. My mother was very health conscious and never cooked bacon, but when my father took me camping our breakfast was always a can of bacon, then potatoes and eggs cooked in the grease. I loved those trips!
Terrance
That is so strange that you mentioned canned bacon. Susan and I were just talking over the weekend about how we have not seen it in the stores for years. We had good memories of it when we were just starting out as it was cheap. It was a great camping staple. Armour use to make it if memory serves me right.
DonDeutsch
I really like this stuff because you could load it in the camper for the season, and not have to unpack it. I always try to buy not perishables and stock them this way.
