Full Version: Dutch oven demonstration workshop
FiberglassRV > Around the Campfire > Rallies, Get-togethers, Molded Meets (Archive) > 2009 Oregon Gathering
Linda&Dale
Hi, I will be having a demonstration workshop about dutch oven cooking on Friday starting at 2:30p in site A46. Please bring your own chair and something to drink, a bottle of water or what ever. There will be samples and you may want to have a drink between so that you can taste each different food. We are getting special aprons for our demo thanks to Jeannie. We will again have the great servers and hopefully as many or more samples.

So that I can be prepared with clear answeres, if you have a special area you want covered please let me know ahead of time. Questions can be anything from "what happens if I mess up the recipe" to "my dutch oven smells funny" to "I bought this rusty pan at a garage sale, can I make it usable" or just anything you would like to know. I am trying to make this interesting to new cooks and those who have been cooking in dutch ovens for years.

Also, I would like to get a rough count to know how many booklets I will need.

I will update as it gets closer. Looking forward to seeing all of our old friends again and meeting new ones.
Linda&Dale
Okay, I have been reminded to post this.

Please leave your pets at your trailer when coming to our cooking demo. Too many people, food and small space makes it not a good place for animals. Thank you very much.

I'll kick this off with an "I'll be there!". 87.gif

We'll be there with our friend Jennifer - two booklets please.
NorCal Ellen
Oh boy, sign me up!

Two topics I'd like to see discussed are:
1. What to do with your DO when it was stored with too much oil rubbed on and now it's sticky OH.gif
2. How to properly store your DO after each use or for a prolonged period.

If you need another body to assist in any way, just let me know.

Looking forward to it!

Oops, forgot to say that it would just be me (hubby will be elsewhere) so just one booklet needed.
Thanks!
Ellen

Hey Linda & Dale,
Sadly, I will not be attending the rally, but I was wondering if some of us way over here East of the Mississippi could get a copy of your booklet and/or a print out (maybe a PDF file) of the problem solving/suggestions that arise from your seminar. Some of the items you have already suggested are of universal interest ("my dutch oven smells funny" to "I bought this rusty pan at a garage sale, can I make it usable" or just anything you would like to know. I am trying to make this interesting to new cooks and those who have been cooking in dutch ovens for years)
Any help is appreciated.
Thanks, Fred 94.gif

Linda&Dale
By all means, you are welcome. I just need to get an idea of how many will be ther to plan booklets, food, sample cups, seating and such items. Just give me a heads up.
Rebecca H.
My husband and I (site B23) would love to join too, if it's not too late to sign up. We're interested in the beginner basics, esp. how to prepare the camp fire/charcoal.

Does anyone have recommendations on a good one to purchase? I'm seeing on Amazon, for example:

- http://www.amazon.com/Coleman-Cast-Iron-Du...ref=pd_sbs_hg_5
- http://www.amazon.com/Stansport-Cast-Iron-...611&sr=1-12

Thank you in advance!

Rebecca

Definitely buy a Lodge dutch oven (DO). The link above shows a great one to start with and is a very common size. It is the style you want. They do make smaller or larger ones, however. It just depends how many people you will be cooking for or what you are preparing.

You will be amazed at Linda & Dale's collection!
Linda&Dale
Eric is right. We like Lodges and a 10 or 12 is a good starter. But it is best to find a place that sells them in person because you want to check the fit of the lid and beat the shipping cost. Most sporting good stores have dutch ovens.

Linda,
I'll be there.

Mari & Terry
Mari & I would like to attend the DO demonstration. Anything to do with food has got to be great.

As new to RVing, we need lots of help and information. Can we attend all of the workshops and demos? Is there time?

We are also bringing our two kayaks. Looking forward to meeting everyone.

I plan to be there and would like a booklet and thank you for doing this! Joelee Joyce

The more the merrier. So far I am planning turkey, mexican lasanga, pineapple upside down cake, pizza and a few more dishes. Now if we can just get the rain to stop.
Linda&Dale
Okay, we leave tomorrow morning. We have eight dutch ovens packed including a spider and the big 17 inch deep one. I have 35 people signed up and about 23 booklets spoken for. I will try to have 30 booklets and they will go to the first to request them but you are welcome to come even if I run out of booklets. Please one per couple.

There will be tons to sample and a great exchange of information from not only me but all of the experiences of those who have their own stories of success or failures. Just stop by A46 and let me know. Plan to bring your chairs at least about 15 minutes early. We will be starting the turkey about 10 so feel free to stop by on Friday and watch as we get ready. Remember, you are still welcome if you let me know anytime before Friday noonish. I just won't promise booklets except for those who have already requested.

We are looking forward to seeing everyone tomorrow and all weekend.
Ellen B
Linda-

Is it too late for Berry to request a booklet? Berry will have his dutch oven with him also. See you tomorrow.

I will have a booklet for everyone who has said they are coming so far, including one for Berry and you. They aren't fancy, just some recipes and heat charts and stuff.
Nancy in Oregon
Michael and I would also like to attend. biggrin.gif

I just want to thank my crew for the wonderful job they did. I couldn't have pulled off the great workshop without them. 85 people came, ate and watched. If you took pictures, we would love to see them. We didn't get any as we were all busy. Donna will have the booklet in PDF form in about a week for those who didn't get a copy. Thanks for the cute aprons Jeannie. Thanks to all of you who came. We are looking forward to next year and will have all new recipes to show you.
