Does anyone know towing capacity of a 1996 Ford Ranger XLT with a 4.0L V6 and manual transmission (also 4x4 and Supercab)?

I don't know for sure but a good guess would be about 3500 to 4500lbs. A stick shift has less tow rating than a automatic.

5900 pounds, according to:

The owner's manual for a 1996 Ford Ranger is available HERE. On page 207 there's a chart showing max trailer weights and GCWR. Depending on your axle ratio it looks like your max trailer weight would be 2,000 or 3,000 lbs., with a GCWR of 6,000 or 7,000 lbs.

5,900 pounds is the combined truck and trailer weight (GCWR). The max trailer weight is less than 3,000 pounds and depends as noted by the transmission and other options.

Ranger SuperCab 4.0 V-6 3,520c,f,i

Ranger SuperCab 4WD 4.0 V-6 3,200d,f,i

I found this at:

Here are the codes:

aRequires automatic transmission and towing package.

bRequires 3.31:1 axle ratio.

cRequires 3.55:1 axle ratio.

dRequires 3.73:1 axle ratio.

eRequires 3.98/4.09/4.10:1 axle ratio.

fManual transmission.

gFifth-wheel towing.

hAutomatic transmission.

iMust be equipped with heavy-duty towing package.

Hope this helps.

Since I actually bought the truck this past weekend...I dug out the manual and figured out my axle ratio based on the code on the door...apparently R6 means 3.76. And of course the detail for this one isn't printed in my manual.

However a previous owner completed all of the calcs and documented them in the manual and has it at 3100lb towing capacity.

Which is good news for me and my Surfside!

Thanks for the replies!
