Hello, I have purchased a 85 13ft uhaul camper recently. I was wondering if there is anyway to attach the spare tire to the bumper. Is there a bracket I can purchase or is the tire too heavy for the bumper? Thanks Stephanie

Is your bumper a long piece of square material (usually 4" square) or more like a "C"?

Stephanie, in the UHaul album is there is one picture showing a spare mounted on the back. I don't know if it's on a bracket on the bumper or through the hull (aka Scamp). Someone else will need to answer that, but at least you know at least ONE person has a rear mounted spare.

Check this out .. it could simply be bolted to your rear bumper. you would need to drill bolt holes though since it is designed to bolt to a square tube RV bumper.
you will want the rigid version.

While we have a UHaul VT, our spare tire is attached to the back. It is bolted through the bumper which is aluminum. According to a discussion on the uhaulcamper forum some time in the past, most bumpers are painted aluminum.

I have a Cloud, the earlier version of you trailer. I have a fiberglass bumper which has a spare tire mount in the bumper. Is you bumper glass or steel?

I will take a picture of our spare tire holder on our VT and post it for you. I believe we purchased the holder at either Bass Pro Shops or Cabella's. I know that I drilled holes in the aluminum bumper (like yours) to attach it securely. When we had a 13' Burro, our tire was attached through the back wall fiberglass of the hull, but I prefer the bumper for better strength.

I went out last night to check about taking a picture, but I realized that I would have to move the trailer (it's up against the garage) and remove the spare tire from the holder to get a picture. So... I felt around and confirmed that it was a bolt-on model originally intended to be used with a 4" square bumper. I took off the back brackets that would have gone around the bumper and just used the 4 holes in the base to mark holes for drilling into the bumper. Then, I attached the spare tire bracket with four large bolts and nuts. It is very stable and the tire rides well. I mounted it on the right side of the bumper, checking to make sure that I didn't cover any of the right taillight.

I made one from some 3/4" square tubing and a couple of pipe nipples from the hardware store. When bolted to the bumper it is very solid.

I found one at JCWHITNEY that should work for a total of $35. It sounds as if I shouldnt have any problems from the bumper not being sturdy enough from what everyone has said about theirs. Once installed I will post how it works out. Thanks again for all the help. Steph
