I was wanting to put more stuff into a 16 footer and raising the bed up 18 inches to double the storage area might seam like a good idea. The problem of that additional weight is a concern. I am looking at putting an addition 1000 pounds or more.

Has anybody done this?

I was thinking that the tongue weight will change or be in the minus.

It is not safe! Do not tow with negative tongue weight!

I have been thinking of something like this too.
I do not see myself going anywhere near 18" though.
I am thinking more along the lines of the under bunk storage you see on Navy Ships where there is maybe a 6" or 8" space under the bed and a hinged lid that lifts the mattress when access is needed.

I think like anything else a balance between extra storage and weight needs to be struck.
If I could just get the clothes under there I might be happy.
