My wife and I bought a 16' 1981 Scamp last year and I've decided to really work on refurbishing as much of it as I can since it turns out to need a new axle that I have ordered from Scamp.

Yesterday I took the back fiberglass modules out and found what I thought I was going to find... water damage. Especially on the left of the trailer where the oven/stove and refrigerator were. I'm guessing that neither of these appliances were the originals but it is possible that they were. The oven/stove is pink and the old refrigerator is a Dometic. Ever since I got it these two appliances haven't fit right due to a sagging floor and screws keep popping out.

Presumably this means I need to take the trailer off of the frame and replace the floor but I haven't seen many in depth articles about doing this. While I'm doing this I am going to have the frame sand blasted and repainted.

I'd like to keep everything original but I think I may have to build a new module for the stove and refrigerator since it seems to have been cut up quite a bit to fit the stove and refrigerator.

There are also some issues with sagging around the door and some poorly done patches to the roof that I'd like to address.

Does anyone have any tips on what to watch out for as I proceed down this long road? I'm particularly concerned about the floor repairs on the raised sections because of the attachment to the shell. I've never done much of this kind of work but I think, with lots of research and some tips from people here who have done this, I can do the work. I'm totally new to fiberglass work and hope I'm not getting myself in too deep.

Hello All,

Long story short: Mom bought a boler from a friend for next to nothing, brought it home, realized she is crazy, and gave it to me, realizing I have a far bigger case of projectitis...

So now I own a boler. In the process of this I was helping her out. We ripped out everything. The fridge and heater were rusted beyond repair. All the wood work was soaking wet and rotten. Even the floor was bad, it came with one "vent" and by the time we were done we had created another much larger one in the rear.

So in two days everything is gone from the inside with the exception of the curved wood pieces for forms. The floor is still in the egg, but that will be remedied by the end of today. The frame is out, I will be sending that to a friend of the family who will be welding in some cross bracing that had rotted out.

So far I can say the only good things are the fiberglass shell, which is not pretty but has no cracks, and almost pitting. The frame also looks to be mostly solid, not torqued, and very rusty.

My plan (and this is where you will all think I am insane):

Project <1,000$

Simple simple simple

No heater, fridge, commode,

I plan on installing LED lighting, fan vent, and one plug, other than that no electricals

a water tank and grey water tank

ice box

same basic floor plan, but with a bench and removable counter across the front

I will add more later

Now before I get the "there is no way on god's green earth that this will happen for less than 1,000..." I have a few resources available to keep it under budget. All my wood is being sourced from my brother in law who has 3 pallets of 10 ply birch sitting in his garage (his company is very wasteful) and with a limited list of what I plan on installing I think the electrical items will be the most cost. Also a frame repair is coming from a friend with a low price for repair (beer).

So I am gonna go now, and I will be back with a list of everything I need. Then I will join the rest of you in your chorus of "you're insane.. not gonna happen... go home kid you're drunk..."

also the name is Josh, live in the Seattle area... this forum is really really good, so thank you to everyone who contributes here.

(a project blog, with pictures to come soon, will link it in here later)

Day 1:
- Removed Shell from trailer and set on blocks.
- Gutted interior of refrigerator, water tank... basically everything...
- Started the process of removing rotten floor (need advise on cutting the floor away from external fiberglass shell as the floor and walls are joined with fiberglass, i am thinking grinder or dremmel). The interior shell was just screwed down to the floor and not fiberglassed in place.
- Removed front and rear windows ( I am planning on running long planks from front to back through the window openings to support the shell so i will not need to support the shell from the bottom. This way i can completely remove the old floor).

I am also looking for suggestions for the new floor. I assume i will need to install the floor in 2 or more sections due to the lip on the exterior shell that the wood needs to slide into. I am looking for advise on materials, how they installed the floor in sections, and how they joined them together keeping the sections from sagging.

I look forward to reading suggestions.

End of day one... Day 2 should be fun...

Hi everyone! First-time caller, long-time listener here. We just bought our 13' Scamp a couple of weeks ago, and I decided I wanted to take out the carpet and install some really smart-looking vinyl tile.

It's going great so far. I got the carpet and the pad ripped out, with the help of a multi-tool from Harbor Freight (as suggested by someone here). A couple of questions:

1) I've been sanding with the 80 grit that comes with the multi-tool. For the life of me, some of this adhesive residue just won't budge. If I sand it really well, and clean it really well, will it matter? Should I go to a higher grit and see what happens? I'm a little leery of over-sanding, since there's not very much to the floor.

2) As I started to work on the dining/bed area, I noticed that the very back of the floor has taken on a little water. It's from a window leak that we knew about from the prior owner. It's really not a lot of water. I'm bleaching it and letting it dry fully before I even touch it. It's only the back 1/5 of the floor. Do I need to replace that section of the floor? Could I tap in a plywood overlay as an easy fix? It's not really a visible part of the interior, so I don't mind the aesthetic implications.

Thanks! I'll post pics of the Scamp and the project as soon as it's finished!
