Depends on what you are looking for. If the destination is what's important - take the plane. If the trip itself is the experience you are after, then you drive or take a train.

I'm still trying to learn how to enjoy a trip - I've always been a destination traveler. (so far, I still have very strong leanings that way!)

These threads from last year make for interesting reading.

Gas prices

Question: Will current gas prices curb the distance of your trips?

Destination

I've always been a destination traveler. (so far, I still have very strong leanings that way!)

BCDave.

Just to share something we didn't know until we were regularly on the road.

We view the destination as where ever we end up for the day. Certainly we have places we want to see but the stops in between become destinations in themselves

Today we're in Deming, NM, staying for a couple of days because the wind is really blowing and makes driving uncomfortable and sometimes unsafe during a sand storm 'white out'.

Though in a place many would not describe as a destination there is always more to do where ever you go than you can do. This morning we went to the local museum and were overwhelmed by the wonderful exhibits. In the afternoon we went up to Spring Canyon, part of Rock Hound State Park.

The Canyon road into the dayuse area is interesting in itself (17% grade). Once 'up' you have marvelous views of surrounding mountains. As well there's a little hiking trail up to what once was an important local spring.

The canyon is in the Florida Mountains between Deming and the border. Another special attribute of these mountains is the Ibix that roam their crags. The Ibix were imported to the area and can sometimes be spotted by careful hikers. We saw none today but definitely find looking fun. On our last visit I think I saw one high above us.

To top the day we saw small fields of blooming CA poppies.

Though we did not look for rocks, Rock Hound State Park is known for gem quality rocks. People hike the edges of the local mountains looking for them. Rock Hound also has a small but pretty campground right at the foot of the mountains.

To finish the day off our campground is having a $6 spaghetti dinner followed by a four piece band.

Every stop is a honey filled sopapilla, our desert after our Mexican meal last night in Deming.

I just booked flights for the latter part of this year, prices are up but cost of actual flights did not go up, taxes and fees did and represent now over 48% of our airfare, ouch.

GeorgeR,

Taxes and fees have only just begun, the Europeans are adding CO2 taxes to all flights in and out and they want to see the same class of taxes on cruises. This invites non European companies to do the same for their countries or regions...

There is a drive to limit individuals from burning carbon based fuels and if they do burn them to tax them for the privilege....

Unfortunately they don't fly to Europe. Our flights require 2 stops increasing airport tax fees.

Wow!! 265 comments so far! It's a GOOD thing it doesn't require INK!
Since that's one thing which definitely costs more than gasoline
