bearing up under pressure
We have a nuisance bear problem here as well, but we only have black bears. They do cause a lot of damage however.
We had one try to walk away with our garbage bin last week.
However, we have never had an incident with a bear while camping .
Not for the years we used a tent, or since we started with eggs.
I think for the most part using common sense and good practices will keep you safe.
As far as the web myth about the grizzly, I was taken in by it as well.
Then when something didn't seem quite right, I started searching for the real story.

These pics are no hoax. That is me and I took the pictures myself. They were taken along the Herrick River outside Prince George in northern British Columbia.

Naw, it should have been a bigger pistol but it is the Bearcat. I used it to pot grouse. I had a rifle hung over my shoulder for serious work.

Thanks Willma. I'm very familiar with the ghost bear. I used to frequent the Terrace and Rupert area of B.C. we are going up the Alcan and coming back the Cassiar Highway.
What a contradiction - a white black bear. :jester
These are grizzly bears tho.

Inappropriate links
Nancy,
Ken gave plenty of warning that his link had strong content. Unfortunately, I went to your comments first & you gave no such warning. I will wish forever that I had not clicked on that link. Please put warnings on such information. I'm not sure that is even appropriate for such a "gentle" forum as our little eggs.

About your Sony camcorder
Hi, Ken
I'm sure you'll enjoy your camcorder a lot. Check if it has a EEE1394 output (also called FireWire). If so, I suggest you to get a EEE1394 card on your computer, if not present. Costs about 40,00 CAN$. That allows to control actions on camcorder from computer for capturing and outside saving after editing. And, best of all, it enhances digital transfer between devices. So absolutely no lost of quality in transfer. For editing softwares, check Google for 'video editing software' You'll find a lot. For an example of what a non-professional editer can do, look at

If you want more detailed information about video editing, email me
Have a nice trip an fun.

Thank you ever so much Raymond. That is what I wanted to know at the outset of this thread. I wanted some information on whether I could legally take a gun into Alaska - and I wanted information on just what you sent me about filming and editing. I have checked around some and I find I will be able to edit when I get home. That was my concern. Did one have to do some of these tricks on site, or, could you simply take raw video and work on it at home?
As for the bear stuff, that got carried away. I wanted to carry a gun along for safety sake. I know there are Alaskan brown bears living in Alaska - of that there is no doubt! To NOT carry a gun into such country to me would be like taking an ocean cruise and leaving the lifeboats behind on the assumption that these great big liners sink so seldom it would be a waste of time. Hmmmmmm, and now they will have us believe that you can reason with a big old bear so long as you have a can of pepper spray or some cute little bells along. Hello! Sounds like the spices for the dinner bell to me.:drillsrgt
Thanks all for participating.

Alaska Questions
Ken,
If you were a U.S. citizen living in the lower 48, you can still take a rifle or shotgun to Alaska if you are willing to do the paperwork and plunk down the $50 Canadian. I don't know who started the restrictive policy first and this is probably not the place for discussing it, but I was surprised to hear that Canadian sportsmen were having similar problems taking sporting arms across the border, so I looked it up on the ATF web site. After 9/11, the process is much the same as taking a firearm into Canada. I have a friend who lives in Vancouver and attends a number of shooting matches in the lower 48. He files form ATF F6NIA every year. I did not ask him about the fee and the ATF site did not mention one. And finally, The Alaskans that I met are not silly about guns. The silly ones are the ones that go into the bush without one. Look up Fred McCluskey in Hyder on your way up to the "other Alaska", and ask him to tell you his bear stories. He never leaves home without his friends, Smith & Wesson. My advice is to stay in RV parks and confine your bear watching to Denali National Park but if you must camp in remote areas, give your camp site lots of distance from trees and anything that would obstruct your view of approaching bears, never cook where you sleep, and never sleep where bears will be fishing.
Copy and paste the links below to get the information on Form ATF F6NIA.

Thanks for chiming in Craig. This is such a great forum - just filled with helpful sensible people. I have been thru Stewart and Hyder, beautiful piece of real estate. I wish I could hook up with your friend. I'm not sure who started all these arms restrictions. I surrendered a single-barreled 12 gauge that I carried for 30 years down on the Idaho border when I answered the standard question of why I had the gun on board the wrong way. "Self-protection" was the wrong answer!
I feel the germ of a business venture hatching here. Rent-a-Rod. How about that? We travelers of the back country can look up a compatriot on the receiving side of the trip and we plunk down a large deposit to rent a firearm for the length of our visit. Surrender same on return and Bob"s your uncle.
