Where's Paul Harvey when you need him? (okay I know he's past on), but... did they get this tow/tug out or did it become a big ole insurance claim?

Always cover your winch cable, snatch strap, or chain with a blanket or at least a couple of heavy jackets. That takes some of the energy out of one if it should break. Never stand between vehicles that are in "recovery" mode to see how things are progressing.

I feel sorry for those people.

Reminds me of a sad story...
Back when I was in the Navy (Yes, those were the days of wooden ships and iron men) a friend borrowed another shipmates car and took a young lady out to Jacksonville Beach. While driving on the beach he got stuck in the sand and yep, the tide came in an ruined an almost new car. Wanting to do the right thing, my friend, who hadn't planned to do so, re-enlisted for 6 years to get the bonus payment and paid for the car.
The rest of the story: The g.f. left him for re-enlisting, two years later he was on a cargo flight to Viet Nam and lost his life to a sniper.

All because of a drive on the beach....

Bob, that's truly a sad story.. but, your friend died as an honorable man and THAT's refreshing to hear as sad as the ending may be. There's a special place your friend has gone on to and we should all be so lucky.

All those who serve are heroes in my book.

It always amazes me how the smallest of choices can change everything.
