Annual Christmas Rant
You get to enjoy my annual Christmas rant, just like FB and my gardening sites.
Ain't No Cannibalistic Reindeer!!!
Blitzen's partner was DONDER not DONNER!!! Jacob and George Donner were the wagon masters attempting to lead a wagon train thru the Sierra Nevada when they got snowed in and had to resort to Cannibalism to survive.
Donder und Blitzen is Germanic for Thunder and Lightning!
All those Children's books are indoctrinating mere children that one of Santa's reinDeer is a CANNIBAL!!
My father took German for his PhD and this was a bugbear to him throut the 50s, 60's and 70's, when I inherited it.
You may now return to your regularly scheduled programming.

Love it. Our community orchestra is playing a narrated arrangement of "The night before Christmas" this weekend and I'll think of this as the narrator (David Ossman of Firesign Theater fame!) says "DONDER and Blitzen." Which I knew, anyway.

Hi Mitzi,
Hmm, I am a bit more enlightened now, LOL. I did not know that. My oldest daughter took 4 years of German in high school (after we told her to take two years of Spanish! ) and she has nearly earned a degree in German along with her architecture degree that she will finish in May. I will tell her your story when she gets some from college on Thursday!
Happy Holidays,
Dean

There's a fallacy here. George Donner was a wagon master trying to cross the Sierra Nevada and the wagon train got snowed in. To survive some of them resorted to cannibalism, therefore anything or anybody with the name Donner is a cannibal. I believe that my logic professor would have called that "false logic".

That sounds logical to me.
I guess that's why it was the "Donner" Party who got stuck in the Sierras, and had to resort to cannibalism to survive. It wasn't the "Donder" Party.

I'm with Byron. FiberglassRV.com requires unique usernames, but we're just weird like that.
However, "Donder und Blitzen = Thunder and Lightning" is a point well taken. Love it!

Rant& Rave...
Hi: All... Here's a bit of something I rewrote for our Omnibus drivers news letter before I retired from Transit. It goes like this...
Twas the night before Christmas and all thru the bus,
the passengers were stirring and starting to cus.
Their stockings were full of varicose veins,
from standing and waiting and standing again.
The students were smug in their dorms, rooms, and beds,
while visions of plum jobs danced in their heads.
And on and on.
I never shrank from lampooning anyone!!!

As a kid i sang this song and probably used the name donner in the song.
In the same light that not every trump will be president, not every donner will be a cannibal, but there sppears to be ONE of each!!!

It is very sad that you felt you had to tap into that horrendous situation of suffering and tragedy to make a joke of Christmas.

Agreed. The world needs positive affirmations and brotherhood/ sisterhood as opposed to nitpicking etymology. Peace to you all.

According to the internet , the original name was " Dunder" , which was then changed to "Donder" , which was latter changed to "Donner".
Maybe he was in the witness protection program.

The origin of Rudolph the Red Nose Reindeer has been gnawing at me.

Amusing , I really have only ever heard " donder " spoken by Hollanders , as a German born Canadian , I have only ever used or heard " donner " - but I've only been around in this and half of the last century ...
