Seems like the rest of the world is coming to understand what those of us here have known for years!

When I was a kid and my family went camping in our pop-up camper, I'm fairly sure that finances were the reason we did what we did. Cooking our Hamburger Helper, spending our time at National Parks rather than amusement parks--and now, as an adult, as a teacher who teaches college freshmen, I sometimes wonder what would change in our world if more people had the opportunity or took the initiative to go camping with their kids. Or even by themselves, as some of us do now.

Get them out of the five star hotels with the fancy room service etc and into a national park campground and the kids won't think "Who They Are" when they get older........... just my opinion

When I was younger during summer vacation my best friend went regularly to Hawaii, the nations newest state at the time, to visit his aunt in Pearl City. During those months we went camping in Canada. One summer he had an opportunity to join us instead of going to Pearl City, and he returned with us year after year. Now it's vogue, who'd a thunk it? During those summer months we'd learn about wildlife, make plaster castings of animal prints, how to handle firearms properly, visit local ranchers for supplies like ice packed in sawdust barns, boat ski, fish and stay up late around the fire....come to think of it, we still do most of that, but in a "molded" fiberglass trailer not a "moldy" canvas tent !

REALLY interesting considering that throughout our trip last fall camp hosts and other camp-related folks told us their business was DOWN. Economy had slumped, then, too. But then again, gas prices were through the roof (on the U.S. scale of typical gas prices).
