Anyone Traveling to See the Eclipse?

Just wondered. I will be in Utah at the Bonneville Salt Flats "Speed Week" the week before. Plan to study the weather forecasts and intercept it somewhere between Idaho and Missouri.

I'll be able to see it from my front yard. No need to join the congestion on the roads.

Originally I was going to camp at Land Between the Lakes, but as we will be on the Oregon coast for the eclipse. Not camping; flying.

I just returned from Idaho 2 days ago. We visited a relative of mine who lives just 5 miles from the path of totality. Traffic, portable toilets, food supplies and crowd control are all major concerns. The locals are anticipating huge problems and high prices. I'm not sure it's worth the hassle for an event that lasts less than 3 minutes.

Had planned to be on BLM land in or near Sand Draw, WY but my health has prevented us from traveling. Guess we'll see 80% or so from home if it ain't cloudy. Otherwise it'll just get mostly dark for a little while...

Thinking about it. It's about a 5 hour drive to the (closest intercept) St. Joseph, KS area. I would prefer to camp the night before, but it might be dicey finding a campsite. Places are filling up fast, I heard.

I snagged a site at Farewell Bend SRA on the Snake River on Oregon when they opened reservations last November. I heard all OR state park sites were gone in a few minutes.

Wink

With the high demand for sites for the 3 minute event, this might be one for the WalMart parking lot.

Same here! Don't need to go anywhere but see it from our house.

I've got a reserved free-of-charge campsite in a friend's farm pasture right outside Columbia SC, an all-day drive from home. Amenities include an extension cord, bathroom access in the house, and some goats to snuggle.

Harvest Hosts at www.harvesthosts.com lists possible places to stay overnight. HH is a club which pairs people who have self-contained RVs (and trailers) with hosts sho are vintners, farmers and other assorted folk. It's very interesting to see how they mapped out places in which to stay in the path of the eclipse.

In Oregon, we saw a total solar eclipse in 1977 (or thereabouts). It was a brief event. We had a special viewer, which took some fiddling--practice with yours if you have one (maybe they're more user-friendly now).

Having experienced one, and having been notified by the Oregon State Parks that they've been fully booked and fully standby booked for half a year, with only boondocking and private lands left (but also very full and locals worrying about food, trash, and toileting issues), I'm leaving the space and provisions in the path for those who feel they really need to see this one. We'll catch it online, no doubt.

Not like it's one to a customer, but more like since we've already seen "our" total solar eclipse, we're standing back and letting someone else have a turn.

You're welcome.

It coincides with my annual trip to my friends ranch, so I'll be out there in the path of totality on private land. Packing some additional supplies in case I have to hold over a few more days.

Glenn Baglo:

LOL

I just tried it--you're right, it's an alternative.

Cinder and Nimble are trying it now--though they may be asleep.

We love any kind of celestial event. We're heading to the hills near John Day, OR. We reserved a private campsite at a local ranch. We've also pinpointed a great observation spot dead center on the path of totality, on Forest Service land. Very excited about this event! Our little Burro will be packed up and ready for our 5 nights on the road...extra nights to avoid any traffic nightmares.

We're heading to Nebraska outside of Grand Island. I've been waiting since 1979 for this when I took a day off from high school to watch a 50% eclipse in my hometown. We'll be staying in the Scamp for 3 nights.

To reiterate:

Accustom yourself to your eclipse viewer BEFORE the eclipse starts!

I know, right?!? Yeah, so they say!

Marcia--
Have a great time! My sister and her entire family will be down there by John Day, too, for the event.

When you're home, inviting you to come on by Dash Point State Park 25 miles south of Seattle between September 19 - 24 (best day: Saturday, 9-23-2017 and say 'Hi" at the Seattle Area Gathering. Threads here on FGRV for it... Saturday: Open house 10-noon (peek into other people's rigs), dog events 3 PM (pet parade, costumes, & tricks), potluck dinner, 5 PM big central field. That is, if you'd like to. You don't have to stay over; it's close enough for a Daycation.
