Post to Yahoo Scampers in a thread talking about auxilliary transmission coolers and having a transmission fluid temperature gauge:

QUOTE
Owners of 05 and 06 Jeep Liberty CRD's (common rail diesels) that number between
11,000 and 14,000 in the US are all too familiar with our transmissions and
especially the torque converter :=} Before flashes to the operating firmware
that put in all these safeguards the torque converters with the plastic stator
failed at around 5k miles. They also detuned the engine and put in a torque
reduction during shifts. The transmissions are now lasting but the 4 cylinder
diesel engine has been neutered. This transmission is also used behind the
Chrysler hemi engines with some of the same problems and has been upgraded for
the 08 models. The owners manual does describe some of the safeguards that were
initially there.

Here's some figures I got off the VW Eurovan group about transmission
temperature and how many miles the fluid is good for at certain temperatures.

175F 100,000 miles
>195F 50,000 miles
>212F 25,000 miles
>235F 12,000 miles
>255F 6,250 miles
>275F 3,000 miles
>295F 1,500 miles
>315F 750 miles
>335F 325 miles
>355F 160 miles
>375F 80 miles
>390F 40 miles
>415F Less than 30 minutes

It just makes you want to go out and change your fluid and add a aux cooler
doesn't it?
