Back from Alaska
:banana Teddy & I are back from our 52 day odyssey to Alaska and back. It was the most wonderful experience of our lives. Well...no, it was the most wonderful trip of our lives, in the experience department it would have to take a back seat to our getting married in 1964:kiss and the birth of our two boys.:cheers
At any rate we traveled 10124 miles in 52 days pulling our 2002 Scamp 5W behind our Toyota Tundra. We saw beautiful things and met many wonderful people including Chester and Marie Taje from this very list. Outside of a small chip in the windshield we had absolutely no problems. I felt that the roads were not nearly as bad as we were led to believe.
For a photo log of our travels go to to the URL of our photo site at clubphoto in my sig below.:jump

OOH, OOH, where didya go?
I am still toying with going to Juneau to visit my sister and her baseball team (7 boys, 2 girls!). I was worried about pulling the trailer that far (and the huge expense of ferrying from Haines to Juneau). If the roads are better than I have heard, hmm, could be a great trip!

Leave your car & trailer in Haines at the Haines Hitch-up RV Park and take the "Fast Ferry" to Juneau. Let your sister and her husband drive you around Juneau or borrow their car or just rent one while there.

Alaska trip?
Larry , wonder if you have any advice for those planning such a trip? Anything you would do differently , objects taken and not used or wish you had taken. Places well worth it and some you could have passed up? Planning the trip next year of about the same length of time and distance.:reyes

Chilkoot Lake
Larry and Teddy,
Thank you for clearing up my confusion about the location of Chilkoot Lake. I was following your trip photos using my copy of the 2001 Milepost and got off track at Haines because the Milepost shows the Haines Highway ending at the ferry landing, when in fact it continues along Lutak Inlet for ten more miles. Following your lead, I looked it up in my DeLorme Alaska Atlas & Gazetteer and found the road to Chilkoot Lake and a state campground. The Alaska State Parks Internet site lists the campground as having 32 sites for small RV, toilets, picnic tables, and water. It happens to be one of the few Alaska State Parks facilities that went without a volunteer host this year and I was wondering why. Do you have any impressions of that campground or remember if there were many campers?

Leave rig in Haines
OOh, thanks. I was thinking of leaving the trailer. Duh, could leave whole rig. I'll have to check if there is a way to get the dog on the ferry. Maybe in a crate? I hate to have to leave her at home for that long.

We went to Juno on the Fjord Express, www.alaskafjordlines.com/ and there was a couple with a dog in a dog crate on our trip. There is also the "Fast Ferry", http://chilkatcruises.com/

Craig,
The entrance to the campground is right there at the roads end by the lake, however we didn't drive into the campground.

:chin Hmmm...what would we do different? Well...nothing comes to mind as we had such a great time everywhere we went. I do think that touring Alaska counterclockwise (i.e. Fairbanks first) as we did is the way to do it. That way everything just keeps getting better. We thought that Fairbanks was great when we were there but if we had visited it last we might have been disappointed. We are already talking about going back next year.

Alaska counterclockwise
Larry,
I believe that your suggestion to start at Fairbanks and do Alaska in a counterclockwise fashion is very good advise. I felt the same way about Yellowstone and Jasper. Wish that I had seen them on the way to Alaska or on a separate trip altogether. It's like once you have seen Denali, it is the mountain by which all others are measured.
Watch for a green Tacoma pulling a Casita on your trip next year.
