Reminds me of the kid killed in Yellowstone when his father tried to pose him with a buffalo...

Here's a photo when Prudence posed with a buffalo in YENP; trust me, I always kept a car between me and the buffalo...

That is soooo my favorite commercial. "Look an eagle!" Been watching that one for years...

And about the Clingman's Dome video, people are soooo dang stupid. That's where you hope that they haven't created many offspring. Ooops, did I say that out loud?

Most bear-prone campgrounds here have installed "bear-proof" garbage containers: takes two hands (and some understanding of picture instructions!) to open.

If a bear becomes accustomed to garbage, it is very hard to get it out of the habit, and they will return again and again, until they are shot.

Last weekend we saw our friend Dierdre at a nearby campground, who is the "Bear Aware" person around here. She was doing a presentation, really a simple message, that must be said over and over. Keep garbage away from bears!

After a while, garbage seems like easy-pickins to the poor creatures, who then become more bold, and want to pry open any "garbage container" to get at it.

Bears who are not accustomed to garbage (and the accompanying humans) tend to scamper off in an encounter (unless protecting cubs or a fresh kill). Bears who are accustomed to garbage will return to the aromatic buffet, cannot be weened off it, and so are put down.

20 years ago, it was a laugh to go down to the dump to watch the bears. Conservation Officers would trap and tag them, only to find the same individuals returning year after year, and getting more and more bold. Then five a year are killed, then 10, then 15, then 20.

So we started putting up smarter garbage containments and stopped killing bears, but just recently.

This video purports that ferrets attack more humans than grizzlies do:

Saw this bear this weekend at camp.

Name:	bear.jpg

Did talk to the camp host about them and they said they had been seen that week at the nearby boat dock garbage.
She also mentioned that some of those people in the past in this area that did get bears at their camp site had melons with them! The bears love them and can smell them for miles probably.

Bears have also been known to come into campgrounds after chikins and even make themselves at home.
