Bike Racks on Rear of Trailer

Simple question..

Not interested in hair-splitters, or,"I would but don't recommend it for others", or even "It depends". Put on your big-boy pants or big-girl panties and sum it all up!

I know it goes both ways, just thought it might be nice to sum up which way the group leans.

Since this has been discussed ad nauseum in other threads perhaps this one might go quicker if the comments were limited to a sentence or two, but it's a little like herding cats...

we have one and i like it, you do need to watch your tongue weight though. a simple matter of adjusting your load. and keeping the bikes and rack as light as you can helps.

The mounting part has to be sufficiently strong, and a rack made for RV use. I'm on my third one, and finally satisfied, but may make more modification. Most people don't understand the stress put on a rear rack by bounce and leverage.

I think that such a general question in a survey is invalid for the group as a whole. IMHO: I don't think that any of us should make a positive recommendation on such a general question.

Perhaps a survey for adding a bike rack to a specific trailer would be more useful.

Not really a yes or no question, so I never voted. For myself, with a somewhat larger (than average here) dual axle trailer, and a factory mounted receiver, it is no problem. Smaller trailers could use one, but be cautious how it affects loading.

And of course, the big issue is that it needs to be securely mounted to the frame somehow.

If it's attached to a new crossmember or members welded to the frame, Yes.
Most rear bumpers are not sturdy enough.

Which trailer? A 13 foot Scamp? An Escape fifth wheel? A 1973 Boler that's been sitting in a cow pasture in Manitoba for 30 years? What's the thickness of the bumper steel? Is it welded to the frame or bolted on? Are you committed to using mechanical sway controls? What's the tug? Where are you going? Will there be wind? How many bikes? What's the gross weight of the setup before adding the carrier? What else is in the trailer?

Etc.........

Withholding my vote pending further information on a one-size-don't-fit-all question.

Yes, been doing it for 12 years with a factory installed receiver which is attached to an extra cross bar which the factory added, that I didn't realize was there, until I was showing someone the receiver and we layed on the ground to actually see what the factory did. Whew!!!! 1 long sentence.
