Bold thread titles?

Why do some of the posts in a the list of threads show up in bold characters, with a down arrow at the start, whilst others are just normal type ?

Posts which you haven't read (new to you) in bold text; once read by you the subject heads change to a state of unemboldenment. Of course the header references a thread so initially the thread is unfamiliar to you but it is the addition of a new post which triggers the return to bold.
