Bikes on the SIDE of the vehicle? Never heard of such a thing!

We ride recumbents so "hanging" on a rack never works due to the shape of the bikes. We need to support the bikes on their tires. Also there are 4 of us -- 2 adults, 1 human child and one huge canine child so blocking the rear doors would mean unloading at least one bike every time we stop -- which is frequent because the human child doesn't have patience for long trips, and if we have to stop we'd better potty the pooch at the same time!

Thanks for the suggestion!

Here's an interesting rooftop carrier I'm thinking of modifying for carrying my itty-bitty fiberglass boat. The side load feature sure would make the load/ unload easier!
I wonder how they fold the bike handlebars- is that a feature on some bikes???

It looks like they just loosened the bolt in the goose neck and then twisted the handlebars.

Can it possibly be that simple?
Trust me to overlook the Bleedin' Obvious....

Thanks, Greg!

Ooh, I like how those bikes attach to the rack and then the whole unit is slid up onto the roof. Thanks again Francesca!

The German folding bikes that Deb and I used had a knob that loosened the bars to rotate them 90 deg.

Hi, Don

What brand are your bikes? How do you like them? We're thinking of buying some folders and are interested in others' experience with them.

Thanks!

Francesca

I don't remember the brand, (it was 38 -/+ years ago) but we used them traveling around Germany by train. Great for touring towns, then back on train to the next sight.

Fellow Eggers : I'm bumping up this thread to the top because I just had a chat with Justin from "Stow-Away 2" cargo carriers.

http://www.stowaway2.com/

As one of their fiberglass boxes will hopefully soon be installed on the rear of our Trillium, and I've encouraged him to join us here in the forum.

Cheers, P.

Smile What in Sam Hill do you all carry?

We travel in the winter for two months in our 13' Tirllium and the two rear storage areas under the seats are always nearly empty! I have placed my kites in the left one recently. I can't understand what you guys all need! Our lawn chairs and ground tackle go in the back of the Subaru.

While working for Boeing, I learned that each pound on an aircraft costs the airline $16,000 to fly around for a year. This was years ago before money became so valueless that it takes $5 to buy one gallon of gas.
