Oh man, sitting here watching the news. Those that ended up in the water were so very lucky they weren't killed.

I heard the news say this am that an oversize truck hit the side of the bridge shortly before the collapse. When a bridge is old and weakened, it doesn't take much sometimes to push it over the edge (no pun).

Guess where I was headed about now Oh well, looks like the Hope-Princton instead given that it's also Memorial Day weekend and the traffic jam today on I-5 will probably be something horrible.

Gotta stay fexible with travel plans.

gosh everyone was lucky - I see the sticky trailer that went in the water pretty well disintegrated.

Ron I feel your pain, just went over the bridge on Monday and was heading back down... now looking at alternatives.... could be a long hot summer on that stretch of the I5 ....

I don't think it will be all that bad except at rush hour(s). Avoid it anytime but the middle of the day. Lots of detour routes available. It's going to hurt businesses in the area, though, especially things like the outlet malls. (She say blithely since she never goes that way.)

That is our preferred route on and off the island to avoid the ferry. Hooefully things will settle down by the time we return home in a week. We do know the backroads.

Seems like it was a trucker, hauling drilling equipment down from the north.
The load was labeled as oversize, and it hit the top structure beams and tore several out, bringing down the entire section.

Suspect your right -my pocket book will like bypassing the outlooks but the bad news is the detours depending on which you take (or they force you down) add another 8 or 14 miles to the trip for those coming and going from the North and a fair bit of time as they are not freeways..... will be slow going. The I20 around Burlington was pretty jammed as it it was this past week-end. Would avoid this week-end for sure while they get the kinks worked out as to what works and doesnt for traffic routing.

Dave you should be fine coming off the Island for most of it. Suspect the big log jam with be on the 20 between the 536 turn off and the I5. Going south you might want to take a turn off down one of the nice little farm roads off the 20 long before you get near the 536. We might start to see some local traffic only signs go up on some of those back roads though as the closure drags on ...... or avoid it and just head down to the Mukilteo/Clinton ferry.

There was in interview last night with one of the fellows who went in the water and he said he saw another semi pass along side the big load forcing the trucker with the big load over a bit more that he probable wanted to be .. will see if thats true or not.

We went through Burlington - Mount Vernon yesterday using the detours around the bridge on the I-5. There was almost no delay because of the detours. The temporary repair is due to be open this week on June 20. You can see from the photo that it is just about ready. The report below says it will re open on Wednesday June 19.
