Built In Gas latern in Compact Jr
Has anyone ever actually used this inside a compact jr and lived to tell about it? I have all the paper work so I know how it works, but just a little nervous, it does intrigue me though.

Well, I guess I'd feel a tad better about a gas lantern in an egg than in a stickie. I have to remind myself that I use open flames on the stovetop, and sometimes a catalytic heater on the floor. Best if you don't leave the lantern on unattended, and always crack a couple of windows for ventilation.

I would think it's safe; however, in Texas the last thing I want in the small interior of a Compact Jr is another source of heat. Another challenge would be the mantle inside the globe. If it's like a Coleman lantern, once it's used it becomes very fragile and the bumps of travel may cause it to crumble.

Some mantles also put out radioactive isotopes. Modern Coleman ones do not. The ones that do are not recommended for use around pregnant women. Just FYI.

I was really surprised when I found out our camper had one. I didn't realise that a lot of older campers had them. When we first saw it we said that is the first thing that is going. Now though, i have been thinking it is kinda cool. A very old order form for new pirex globes came with the camper and someone had filled out the form. So i am pretty sure, someone ussed it in the past. Ill give you an update after i order a new globe and modern mantles.

I keep remembering all the soot from burning off the new mantals in my Coleman lantern. Not sure I'd want that mess in my trailer. In fact, I know I wouldn't. Hopefully a permanently mounted lantern in a trailer doesn't do this!

I love them... I used the one in our CJ when we had it, and then put one in our Scamp. Since we boondock always, it's just what we needed, no batteries to keep replacing. And yeah, the mantles are fragile (sometimes--other times they last for a several hundred mile trip), I ordered some from Humphry- they're bigger than the lantern ones and give off more lite. And in the fall on hunting trips, the extra heat is welcome.

Use hair spray to keep mantles while traveling.

How to use hair spray? Spray after the mantle has been burned?

Mine doesn't work right but I would love to replace it with a new gas lamp. It casts a nice light and the Campster has plenty of ventilation when the top is up. No worries about sleeping with it on as who sleeps with the light on? At bedtime turn it off and put the top down if it is chilly. I have not done it mainly due to having other priorities and every time the topic comes up someone is sure it is too dangerous.

Don- Google "hairspray and propane lantern mantle" There seems to be two schools of thought... Before when the mantle is unused, and after it has been lit and you are ready to transport. Gonna have to try it.

I was surprised that the 77 Ventura didn't have one. We had a 57 Rocket sticky that had one and it was great it'd take a bit of the damp chill out of a cool night and give a nice light. Admittedly the socks can be a PITA.

My mountain cabin now has my Propane Mantle lamps...
each lamp puts out 7500 BTU's on high....they are a
nice source of heat.
My Campster is totally LED and I'm still looking for a
'fanless' propane furnace...if you have one....I need it.

Big buddy heater, can be used with or without the built in fan and can use little bottles or big ones with an adapter.

Thanks James....however my other requirements are....it has to be built in and must vent to the outside...What I really want is a HYDRO FLAME furnace...which fills my 4 requirements as follows.
1....Built in
2....Propane
3....Vented
4....Fanless
