Campground recommendation in east Phoenix area,Mesa.

Another question for experienced travelers. I will be spending a week in March near the Mesa area by Phoenix to visit with family.

Sorry...hit the wrong button on my iPad......any hoo, I would rather stay at so,e of the interesting campgrounds outside of town in the mountains, but as this is a family visit, more than anything, I was wondering if anyone had experience staying in these places? They seem like they are designed for big rigs...and semi permanent snowbirds. Are there any you could recommend that wouldn't make one feel out of place? Or any other suggestions? I haven't been able to locate a "regular" campground in the vicinity yet. Thanks

Lost Dutchman State Park is just outside town, and is very nice that time of year. Reserve early, though- everything fills up during spring training season.

Another possibility to check out is Usery Mountain Regional Park. Never stayed there but heard it's nice and closer in to town. It's a county park.

McDowell Mountain Regional Park is great. It's just above Fountain Hills a very nice community with a 500 ft high fountain. The park has 59 miles of trails surrounded by mountains.

I have stayed at Usery, it's a very nice park. A bit close to a shooting range, but the views are stunning and the park has a wonderful setting with lots of stuff to do as far as hiking etc.

I have stayed at Lost Dutchmen as well, it was a pretty nice park and you will not feel you are out of place with your trailer as you may at many of the private campgrounds in Arizona in the winter months.

Lost Dutchman has two areas. One is drive-through parking lot style with full hook-ups and has an RV park look. The other has larger water/electric and tent-only sites and is nestled into the desert landscape. Much nicer, if you can manage without sewer.

In either case, reservations are essential Jan-Mar. Even motels are packed during spring training season.
