Camping near Charleston SC?

I am in the early stages of planning a week long trip sometime in August to the Charleston area. We have only stayed in State Parks so far (Florida, Georgia, & Alabama) but the closest SP in SC appears to be an hour from Charleston. I would like to be a lot closer than that. Anyway, anybody have any recommendations on a FGRV & pet friendly (non-"resort") campground closer than that? Safe, clean and nice over price, but cheap is good too.

James Island County Park, excellent campground and pretty much right in town. A little tricky to get to and very popular. Great dog park.

check out buck hall campground. it's 25 miles or so north of charleston on hwy 17. a forest service cg (francis marion national forest) on the intercoastal waterway. each site has water & electric and there's a dump station. since there's only 14 rv sites (all reservable) a reservation is recommended. with the geezer pass it's only $10/night. i host there every year in march and april so, if you've any questions, i most likely have answers.

Patrick's suggestion is top notch, a great little campground. Last time I was there 2 of the 14 sites were occupied by fiberglass trailers.

Just seven more years till I get a discount! Thanks for the suggestions guys, I will check them out. We will probably end up staying in at least a couple of places just to swap things up.

I live in Charleston area (Mt. Pleasant) and James Is. County Park and Buck Hall are indeed excellednt suggestions. Depends on what you are looking for. Buck Hall is more remote with great view of marshes, James Is. Is closer to historic sites and downtown Charleston. I will caution you that August is our hottest month, one that many of us leave for cooler parts in the mountains. Temps and humidity are high and persist late into the night.

If it were me and I had a flexible schedule, I would delay trip till mid-October or early April when azaleas are in bloom. You will still have warm days and cooler nights. Whatever you decide, Charleston is a beautiful place and I hope you enjoy your time here!
