Camping on Long Island N.Y

Anyone have any experience camping on Long Island New York?
My daughter is moving to Brooklyn and was not sure if there was anywhere nearby with good campsites.

many of the campgrounds in that list are across the sound in Connecticut, a few of those we have camped at. Our daughter went to college in Southampton, Long Island, so we made many trips out there. Driving out on the Long Island Expressway could be an experience. We mostly would get the ferry out of New London CT to Orient Point LI to avoid going near New York City. Daughter now lives in New London. My Trailer Life campground directory only shows 4 campgrounds on Long Island. We did check out one, I think it was the one out by Montauk. Just a flat, open area. Campsites in rows, as I recall.

Camping reservations can be made online at Federal recreation, camping and tour reservation information - Recreation.gov.

We haven't camped there, but we read an article about it in the paper and it sounded wonderful! Cheapest place to stay in NYC for sure.
