Campsites near Grand Rapids MI

We just moved from Hong Kong (population 7+ million) in southern China to Waushara County (population 5000) in central Wisconsin. Massive culture shock!

On 23 Jul we pick up our new Scamp 13 in Backus and do our "shakedown cruise" at Stony Point, a nearby National Forest camprground.

Our first "extended trip" will be to Grand Rapids MI, where we will join our daughter for Calvin College's weeklong orientation for international students. Instead of staying at a hotel / motel, we prefer to camp nearby in our Scamp.

Any suggestionss for a campsite near Grand Rapids MI? We've purchased a Trailer Life Directory, but would appreciate recommendations from folk who've "been there, done that".

Thanks!!

Welcome to Fiberglass RV
There are enough members from Michigan here that you should get some good suggestions, in the meantime I found a few old posts that mentions campgrounds.

holland state camp ground. a short ride away. beautiful beaches, sand dunes, hikeing trails, fishing, downtown holland is real close and beautiful .
be sure to swing over to tunnel state park where you can walk threw a tunnel cut into the sand dunes to get to the beach.

and welcome to michigan,,,the closest place to heaven you can get to towing a scamp.

While in G.R. you should visit the Gerald Ford presidential museum. Even if you're of the democratic persuasion, you'll find it interesting. Four campgrounds in the Newaygo area with one right in town on the river.

Meijer Gardens and sculpture park is also a popular place to visit.

Sister likes Holland State Park. Never been there myself.

Grand Rapids area campgrounds

I live in Ionia, MI, 35 minutes east of Grand Rapids. Unfortunately, that aren't really any great campgrounds very clost to Grand Rapids. However, if you don't mind driving half an hour or so, I can recommend Wabasis Lake Campground, NE or GR a bit. It's a great park. Or Ionia State Recreational Area, they have a great campground too.

Thanks, folks, for your prompt and helpful replies. We're inclined to stay at one of the nearby state parks (have to check cost of non-resident fees), but will also view websites of all sites you recommended. Since our youngest daughter (and last child) plans to study in Grand Rapids for 4 years, we may be in the area often.
