Can Someone Please Host A UP Rally?!

I so want to visit the Upper Peninsula this year...or next...and a fiberglass trailer rally would be the perfect excuse!

But really, I'd attend any rally on Lake Michigan or Lake Superior

Happy New Year, everyone!

In the Army a comment like this would be followed by someone in charge stating "You're showing an unusual amount of interest." followed by "Make it happen!"

That said, I'd attend if the timing worked. I suggest the Western end of the U.P.. Maybe the Keweenaw Peninsula or Porcupine Mountain area?

Happy New Year!

Tom

I think there is a campground near the tip of the Keewenaw peninsula
It would be nice. Lots to explore around Houghton/Hancock.
Copper Mines, etc.

We have camped at Fort Wilkins , Porcupine Mountain , Lake Gogebic , Barraga and several other UP State Parks that I can not remember .
All would be good choices for a rally in the UP.
The UP is one of our favorite places to go when it gets too hot here in Northern Wisconsin

** I do have a Yooper dictionary and several Yooper tapes if I can remember where I put them .

I've never actually been to the UP but all of those places look great after a quick googling!

TomK - I think Wayne Collins and steve dunham sound like the perfect people to "make it happen"

I am really surprised . I grew up and lived in Minnesota for over 60 years . I thought every Minnesota boy snuck off to the UP at least once in their life or at least across the border to Wisconsin to grab a beer !!

UP rally?

I think that there is on average a 3.6 day window in the snow fall every year that would be possible. However, it shifts a few weeks each year so may be hard to plan?

We loved Copper Harbor. Not sure when they get their annual 22'-24' of snow.

My best to you all! I was wondering if there could be a rally closer to Seattle and they pinned the rose on me. It went well enough last September that we plan to hold it again this year.

You, um, VOLUNTEERED. As the other poster said, "Make it happen!"

BEST
Kai

Don't forget Tahquamenon Falls State Park. More towards the eastern end, much closer to the Mackinaw Bridge, thus closer for the down-state folks, but still easy for Wisconsin and Minnesota folks. Keweenaw Peninsula is a LOOOONNNGGG drive from lower Michigan.

Campground is nice, and a short, easy walk to the Lower Falls. Can either walk (4 miles one way) or drive to the Upper Falls. Also near Whitefish Point and the Great Lakes Shipwreck Museum (Edmund Fitzgerald, make famous by the Gordon Lightfoot song). The Park was beautiful this past fall, with the colors changing.

Well, I would certainly be glad to give it a go.... once I can find a 17' Casita SD (but that's a whole different story).

My father and I had hunting property in the western UP for nearly 50 years so I am quite familiar with the area. In fact, I would bet the friend that we sold our property to would be more than happy to open up his land for a FGRV Rally. The attached map shows the approximate area. While it isn't extremely close to any one particular attraction, the whole western UP is less than a day drive away. There's the Porcupine Mountains 47 minutes away, Copper Harbor 2:10, Bond Falls Water Falls 21 minutes, Lac Vieux Desert Resort Casino and golf course 24 minutes. But really, the property itself - nearly 200 acres - is spectacular for walking the trails so maybe you don't need to travel more. Also, the town of Bruce Crossing (2.5 miles away) has a small camp ground with dumping stations as well as a CO-OP store with lp and gas.

So, once I can find my Casita (or wait for a new one), I will be glad to give it a try! I don't know what the current wait times are for a new one since Chasidy at Casita is gone until January 8. But fall time might still be possible. Never been to a Rally so it will be a first for me but I'm up for the challenge.

Oh no! You folks won't like the UP. Its full of dark forests, deserted shores and snow 20 feet deep. If everybody came I would have a harder time finding a campsite. So consider Arkansas or Texas. Please!

John

You can probably tell from the pics below what a bad place the UP is.

Stay away for your own (I mean my) good. ;-)

When/if planning a rally in the MI UP, be aware of black fly and no see'um bug seasons: Mid May to Mid June but could be as late as August, depending where you are in the UP. Oh, and mosquito's of course. 2 seasons ago we went in July and the fly's were...were...sorry had a flashback...which has resulted in a bit of PTSD...

OK, I'm back

If anyone decides to go to Isle Royal NP, you should consider driving into Canada and taking the ferry, rather than from Copper Harbor in MI. And if you do go to CA, then stop off at the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness, for a day or two, and rent a canoe or kayak.

Buy some locally smoked fish; I like White fish, but others think Walleye is best, and try a Pasty, but get gravy with it. And maybe a mess of deep fried Smelt...
