I have verified that this does work and it is another lower cost alternative,maybe.
The Magic Jack is a USB VOIP card that slides into a USB slot on a computer.
For $20.00 a year it provides you with a standard dial tone over the broadband connection of your computer.
So if you have a Broadband Connection from whatever means the Magic Jack lets you also have telephone service by plugging almost any standard home telephone into it....REALLY!
So lets say you get a Broadband card cheap from Walmart with a minimal pay as you go plan?
No contract and you can pre-pay and keep the total low if needed.
Then add the Magic Jack for $20.00 a year and you have a phone number in your choice of area code too.
Seems like an alternative to me.
