Central PA to Miami route

I will be helping my son move from central PA to Miami this Saturday to Monday. Google maps shows several route options.

First is south to pick up I-95 in Wash DC.

Another is south to I-81 / I-77 / I-26 / I-95 in S Carolina.

This route is nearly identical in length and might have prettier scenery.

Does anyone know if the flooding in WV has caused any problems with these roads? Or any other concerns with the route?

We will be driving a 16' truck and a small car.

Any input is most appreciated.

We have done the 81 / 77 / 26 / 95 route many times. I 77 does go up over the mountains so there is an area of climbing / descending. We prefer this route to get to 95 in the southern states. Have also done Winchester VA to Fredericksburg VA to get to 95, or route 29 down through Greensboro, but those were camping trips so covering ground quickly wasn't an issue

I agree with Bob on the Winchester to I-95 route. You my get a little jammed up at F-burg Va. going from Rt-17 to I-95. If you take the I 295 by-pass around RIC you will have a straight flat drive south. The next town with any issues is JAX Fl. it can get pretty conjested in town, even though a longer route the east bypass loop is an easier drive.

Good input, thanks.

Does anyone know if any of the recent flooding and such has caused any difficulty traveling on I-81, I-77, I-26?

If you don't get any local input here, your best bet it to look for a state highway website that lists closures and restrictions.

I grew up in the DC area, and the only time I venture anywhere near is via public transportation. The drivers and congestion are crazy! You are much better off, if there has been no problem in WVa, is the 81-77-95 route.
People in Miami drive 85 mph glued to your bumper and every time that you try to fall back even a little another car will jump into your space.

You will not be passing through WV if you go 81/77. 77 splits off of 81 just north of Wytheville, VA. There were some areas hit hard by flooding along 81, in Rockbridge, Allegheny and Botetourt counties between the cities of Staunton and Roanoke. Unless you go well off the interstate, you should not have any troubles.

I can't answer for 26 or 95.

Happy travels.
