Coastal Camping? Get Automated Tsunami Warning Text To Cell Phone.

If you have ever camped on the beach or in a tsunami warning area this may interest you. You can sign up to get instant tsunami warnings e-mailed (textd) to your cell phone. That warning would be a really nice thing to receive if you were asleep in your camper and a tsunami was on the way.

Read the instructions, they are kind of complicated. Choose the short version message. Set your phone to give an audible beep or tone when you receive a text. Cell phones that can send and receive texts and pictures have an e-mail address that starts with the phone number. Find out what yours is and e-mail your phone a message from your regular computer to make sure it works. Enter your phone's e-mail in the signup form so it will receive the message.

Thanks Bruce. Although I typically don't camp on the coast (I prefer inland), our entire state has a beautiful coastline and terrific parks for camping. We KNOW the big one is coming one of these days. I just hope it's not at a time anyone with a molded fiberglass trailer is in it's path. In fact, if I could arrange it... I'd like EVERYONE to get sufficient warning to get to higher ground.

Neat idea. Now I just have to figure out how to figure out my cell phone email address.

Update, It works. I still have my phone set to receive these warnings. It started going off about three oclock in the morning when this happened. It showed an "M8.9" near Japan with a warning area of the west coast, British Columbia and Alaskan coast. Then they began repeating the warning every 30 minutes. I had to turn my phone to silent.

Well, that would be handy for July at the big Oregon Gathering in Bandon.

I don't know if anyone who has attended noticed the Tsunami warning signs at Bullards Beach SP, they show the place to go is up the hill beyond the dump.

I wonder if there is a way to get voice alerts- I don't have texting and don't want it but my summer home is in a tsunami zone.

Another good service (focusing primarily on the Northwest) is Flashalert.net. Portland schools use it to alert parents of closures, Red Cross uses it for emergencies...I have Oregon State Police alerts.

Too bad there isn't any NOAA stuff on there, though. Thanks for the link!
