We Eat Well on the ROAD

My wife and I travel long distances driving. I alway have a small cooler of DDP (Diet Dr. Pepper) and we stop for coffee for her. As far as food, I always make up chicken or tuna slad dip w/ Frito Scoops chips, cut vegatables, and have a bag of cookies, before we get underway. So far we haven't had an accident while driving, or dropped any food on the seat covers or our clothing, and have traveled over 100,000 miles in 3 years. My job keeps me out of the country for 5-7 months a year, so the truck does most of the miles during the short period that I'm home.

I should be retiring soon so we are looking at getting an EGG soon and slowing our travels down. I figure we will still put on a lot of miles, just at a slower pace.

Jelly beans are good, beef jerky, too, if I can find the brown sugar kind I like. Cheese- usually I get Jarlsberg Lite slices from Trader Joe's. Peanut brittle if it is near Christmas and someone gave me a box of Sees. Coffee or diet Coke or water.

I'm addicted to Diet Dr. Pepper, Planters South Beach Diet Nut Mix (Macademias, Cashews, and Almonds) and Jujyfruits.

Smile Favorite Road Snack

For me, only one, Tim's Chips, preferably Jalapeno although Wasabi are also good:

Nuts, oranges, apples, chocolate. Never in large quantities, usually spread over the drive time. Occasionally we stop for a coffee and a donut, a neat part of these small rigs.

Traveling donuts! The little white ones, can't hit the road without them!

And when that binge is done we move on to Costco's trail mix, a better source of nutrients.

We've eaten enough of these little white donuts over the years that kids (now 26 and almost 28 still call them "traveling donuts when they see them)

Mornings usually start with a mug of coffee, and we break into carrot & celery sticks, string cheese, and cut-up apples or banana for snacks. Later on diet Pepsi and water replaces the coffee and few fig newtons or a trail mix bar find their way in to the mix. A stop for gas often involves the purchase of Smart-Pop popcorn.

Sightings of Starbucks Mermaid may evokes U-turns, mochas (light on the chocolate) and one of their sandwiches to split.

Hi: All...Each of our tugs has a container of plain Almonds for munching and bottled water. Coffee stops are allowed at Tim Hortons 1 med. double double & 1 sm. black ...then so are "Lay bys to Pee by"!!!
For a hot lunch in the trailer, pack, not to tight, a thermos with weiners, add boiling water, seal and lay in the sink. When you stop get out the buns, mustard, relish, and catchup.
Ball Park Hot Dogs YUMMMM.

I go with my trusty 16 oz Wawa travel mug full of hot tea (milk and sugar) and I have a serious weakness for chocolate Twizzlers while driving.

Alternatively, water bottle filled from the tap at home plus a couple of Velveeta sandwiches with mayo.

Yes, I am fancy.

A big travel mug of coffee ... If I find a Starbucks, Cafe latte.

Raw almonds or peanuts. I like them spiced.

If I think ahead, mini carrots.

Because I should also be watching my weight, I like peterh's idea of fruit, but rarely plan ahead to have that stuff cut up and ready for travel.

Road Food

Any flavor of Lance's filled cracker sandwiches, Planters Go-Paks (individual trail mix bags), individually wrapped Cinnabun bars, trail bars (the soft, chewing kind not the crispy kind) or you end up with crumbs everywhere including in your BVDs!, juice boxes, coffee in the Thermos made the previous night in camp. DW likes all the fresh finger food sized fruits and veggies. Way too healthy for me. Reminds me of a retired friend for whom the Four Basic Food Groups are salt, sugar, fat and alcohol! - the latter not while driving, hopefully! Also, The night before we leave home for the first leg or any trip I usually make wraps composed of whole wheat tortillas filled with sliced cheeze, lunch meat, fresh spinach or letuce, mustard, mayo, etc and then rolled up (basically whatever is in the fridge). These are nutricious, tasty, easy to handle one-handed while driving and not messy. I like canned or bottled iced tea on the road for that little rush of caffeine to get you thru the next hundred miles. And, of course, at my age, the best feature of the Casita is I have my own WC with me at all times!

Of course, there's always the Lucy method of preparing meals on the road as demonstrated in "The Long Trailer".

beef jerky, and pumpkin seeds are my main staple. When my co-pilot is doing her job and feeding me grapes like the adonis that I am... I'm happy with that too :P
