On TV news this weekend a commuter from Mariposa won the Midas contest for the most miles, 186 each way to Cisco Systems in San Jose. In the interview the Electrical Engineer said his annual fuel bill was just under $10,000 and annual mileage 90,000. He has been doing this for 17 years! Probably uses synthetic oil.

Strange as this may seem, you could probably find someone who commutes farther.

Life is too short to spend it commuting! I bet he hates family road trip vacations too.

I USED to do San Diego to Riverside, Ca. daily. That was 79 one way.

Now I do 45 one way.

In Oregon, I did Sprindale (Out on the columbia river gorge) to Beaverton (SW Portland) dialy. Did that for many years.

Don't think I could go any higher now, but it's a sad fact of Ca. Reality if you want affordable housing in a less the urban area.

I live in Oregon and work for a university in Cambridge, MA. Luckily, I never have to drive there or even fly to it very often - only three or four times a year.

From the time i back out of my garage i log a total of 1.66 miles to my parking spot at work.

I would like to compete for the shortest commute if there is a catigory for that.

That should not count people that walk out the back door.

I work 13 miles door-to-door. In the rush hour commute it takes me right at an HOUR each way. No wonder I get such crappy gas mileage. I've often thought about purchasing a Vespa-type scooter, but the windy, rainy cold weather prevents that. And since that is the type of weather we get more than half the year, guess I should just buy stock in an oil/fuel company
