US Side: They don't have to ask permission, just read the sign posted at the crossing and it will tell you that you have no rights. The last time I read it - it said you can't even ask for their badge number as that is considered harassment and badgering. Once while going into Winsor Canada, She ask me if I had a gun then when I said no she asked me if I own an gun and I said yes then she asked if I was sure I didn't have it with me.

All these questions are to asses your reaction.

Absolutely. Any law enforcement folks I know have all gone through training on how to read responses from people, usually through reactions to questions asked. I have a good friend who is a cop, and his kids hate the fact he can read them so well.

Totally agree Frederick, could be for no other reason than their number just popped up for a search. But if it happens more than a few times in a row it doesn't hurt to ask why. It could be that someone with the same name has recently gotten a permit for a handgun and its been put against the wrong persons computer file. Have a friend who suddenly started being delayed at the US airport customs and missed more than a few flights over it - until he talked with a Customs Supervisor and asked what the problem might be - someone with the same name was on the US watch list. After reviewing his actual ID and info they agreed they clearly had the wrong persons file tagged and no more delays after.

Its the classic situation. Computers are wonderful things but they are only as good as the information put into them.

That is sad to hear, Jim. Sending positive healing thoughts out to the border guard.

Yup happened at 2:00 this afternoon - he shoot a female guard while she sat in the booth. Hit her in the neck -she is seriously injured the guy then shoot himself. Happened at main Peace Arch crossing which is still closed north bound.

Edit up date: Guard is said to be in stable condition. The shooting is the first of a border guard in Canadian history

Apparently the officer was accidentally struck by the bullet that the gunman killed himself with. She is expected to make a full recovery.

Its is great to hear she is going to make a full recovery and that at this point it is the only consistent version of the updated news stories. Another version is there were two shots fired with lots of first hand witnesses claiming that. First at her than quickly at himself once he realized he wasn't going to make it through. Suspect we are going to have to wait for the official version of events to be released before we know what really happened.
