The Russians launched Sputnik, the first satellite to be put in orbit. I was 11 years old and remember looking for it to pass overhead.

Thinking Sputnik. 4th grade. In the years afterward we started to have traveling Science shows at our school sponsored by the govt. I believe. Those certainly made an impression on me and shaped my career.

My mom took me out on the front porch so we could look for it as it drifted overhead. I doubt that we saw it, but I still remember the awe I felt as a kid.

I cheated, but I do remember looking for it in the night sky, and I believe that I did see it.

Wow, that many years ago...

Do remember seeing mushroom clouds while living in Northern Arizona on the Navaho Reservation along about that time. I'm sure my parents took us out to look for sputnik.

Yup, I remember. I still have a (reel-to-reel) tape recording of the .... .. from the first artificial satellite even though I don't have a player to play it back. Come to think of it I don't have the capability to output a lot of my old data (think 8" disks, data cassettes).

I assume you're asking me.
Yes of course I did. But I also remember it very clearly. I was 15 years old at the time and in high school. Sputnik was discussed in several classes.

I remember it, barely. I was probably more interested in trying to learn to ride my bike at that age. I do remember where I lived at the time. My dad was stationed at Fort Rucker, Alabama and the space race was a really big deal!

I remember - I was twelve. In the UK there was much talk about the Russians preparing taking he world over from the Americans. I looked for it but there wasn't much chance from London. Too many lights (even back then in the olden days)!

Janis Joplin died on this date, but it was only 42 years ago. I remember that.

I remember my parents seeing in the local paper (Winnipeg Tribune) the times it it would be coming over and we all trooped outside to see a tiny blinking star that moved across the sky while the other stars all stayed in their places. Not really impressive to a small boy!

I was 6 1/2 months in utero at the time. Things were quite good for me then.

But I must say, you were born in a great year.

I'll never forget it. I worked with a school curriculum director late 50s, early 60s. Seemed like every other sentence out of his mouth was "on October 4, 1957 when Sputnik I went up". Of course, I also remember because I was in the fall semester of my senior year in college. Because it's burned in my mind, that's why I asked. Glad those of you who aren't old enough to remember were smart enough to look it up.
