I think the author missed an opportunity to do a more substantial article about how people can travel across the country economically in their small fiberglass trailers.
We're in our 12th year of averaging 7 months a year on the road. Our view is that fewer people are traveling in RVs. Campground owners are seeing lower revenues even with increased public and private campground prices.
There's no doubt that our fiberglass RV makes it more economical. For us we just keep going, not so for many others.
Kind of makes you wonder if the increases in ownership are influenced these days by folks facing economic pressures that resulted in them giving up homes and living in RVs.
The last time I was out camping, I was surprised how large most of the camping trailers were. Most were huge, and pulled behind full size pickups. The cost to pull a rig like this has got to be insane. My suspicion is that some people who own rigs like this have been forced to travel less distance and stay on location longer. In some cases, the trailer becomes a weekend dwelling that is only moved at the beginning and end of the camping season.
It would be interesting to have a statistical breakdown of what people actually DO with their trailers.
In my part of the world,the economy is running pretty strong and there are many many huge travel trailer and tow vehicle combinations around. I myself prefer a small fiberglass trailer with small tow vehicle, but there are obviously many others around who are happy with their big rigs. In the summer, the roads around here are bumper to bumper with campers.
