Jack, I understand the basis of the problem quite well, but you have even confuzzled me.

More simply, it can be looked at the same as in pricing, as one is markup, the other margin.

I get queried on that all the time by customers at work. For example, when they see that my take on a project is 20% margin (percent of overall costs), they balk when they see that I need to mark up the cost of work by 25% to get this margin. Simple math proves the point though.

If one can provide a simpler way of thinking or a more transparent context of explanation, how could one be said to be confused? Or confuzzled? Perhaps it might better be said that one is more pleased with one's answer than with another's? Or more familiar?

I was poking around my local junk yard, er,..... recycler and they had a mound of new 1/4x20x1" stainless bolts. I grabbed a pound, which is a lifetime supply for me at this age. Total - $1.00.

How about the quantity referenced, the governing quantity, the quantity by which other quantities are measured as a percentage thereof? Or, the denominators are different? Or it's an obscure illustration of how to front load markup to back fill profit margin? Or what a confuzzlin development? Or search me?
