Dumb question: Tiki torches

Dumb question... I thought I'd add to the ambiance of my campsite with tiki torches. Like most things in life however, I can't seem to get them to 'work'.

What is the trick to getting the citronelloa oil to burn... rather than the wick. I soaked the wick in citronella oil for an hour... and yet it still burns the wick down to the base within a couple of minutes. Do I have bad wicks? or am I doing something wrong.

I just got two Coleman firelight torches for Bday. They run on the same
throwaway propane that we're already carrying for everything else.
Lit them up the other nite and they're pretty cool.

I'm afraid those Coleman torches are a little out of my price range.

I think I am burning good now... having topped off the citronella more... I guess there wasn't enough in there to facilitate the 'capillary' action.

I had a set of Tiki torches with cheap wicks. They burnt up right away. The torches with the more expensive wicks last a very long time.

I think the more expensive ones have a high percentage of fiberglass in them and the cheap ones are mostly cotton.

Isn't fiberglass a great thing?!?!

I guess I haven't paid attention... are new wicks as widely available in stores as citronella oil?

I just bought a set of 4 solar tiki torches for the camper. They will not be as messy as the liquid kind. Probably not as bright either, but they flicker and do look kinda cool.

Something to remember, if the forests are closed to open flames... no campfires, that probably means no liquid-based Tiki torches either.

....further to what Donna says, in some places these things are illegal!! There was a rash of them being knocked over and the lit fuel splashing on people (usually small fry), so PLEASE be careful with these kool luminaries.....

Yes.. they are a strict no no here in my Forest, and most of the forests in so. Cal.. probably all of California now.

Fortunately, they're a 'go' here in eastern Nebraska and Iowa. Dry conditions not much of a problem these days around here.

I suspect they'll be a 'no go' in the Black Hills, where we're travelling at the end of July. Oh well, one less thing to pack.
