Tesla, a company that the Uncle Sam has heavily funded that uses Lithium Ion batteries.

If you park your Tesla car at an airport for 12 days while on a trip the batteries will self discharge to zero.

Once fully discharged, the batteries are now trash and must be replaced. Interestingly when this happens the car can not even be towed because it goes into a locked up state. Replacement cost $40,000.

I don't know if all lithium ion batteries do this but it's certainly worth considering this property

I always thought Li-Ion batteries had a much longer shelf life than ni-cad's which discharge approximately 1% per day, Li-Ion can go for months before starting to discharge. At least that is what happens on my tools and everything I read. Also when it is discharged, I recharge, I do not have to throw away.

This new Envia Company technology dramatically increased Li packing density. They developed electrode substrate at nano level (20nm) structure density. Time will tell how successful their technology would become. I hope that some new technology would come out from US. I prefer batteries versus supercaps which can rapidly discharge in explosion. Worldwide development of battery technology is moving rapidly, so, let’s hope.

20 years ago no one would predict that new Nokia smartphone will have 41MP built in camera; as a matter of fact no one predicted a word “smartphone”.

Lithium Ion batteries at 40% discharged state in high temperature (airport parking) will self-discharge.
