Truckers have an incentive to drive more hours than they are safely allowed to, i would figure most rv'ers are in no rush.

Well things have changed out on the highways. We drove 300 miles out of Los Angeles leaving at 4:30 am There were a whole lot of trucks driving the highway. There were twice as many parked along highway sidings and rest areas. trucks everywhere going in both directions.

This data logging must have made this drastic change. Something is booming. For the most part the drivers were more courteous too didn't see as many truckers trying to make up time. I give truckers wide space when I travel their on the job and i am not. But the traffic pattern was so different and so noticeable. There is not enough road sidings for them along the desert highway.

Exactly.

Rules for commercial vehicles and drivers are completely different, and unless RV's were somehow re-categorized as falling under commercial regulations... Can you imagine?... electronic logs, annual physical exams, background checks...

Maybe we should lobby for it. We could get the hospitality industry on board... Think of it!... empty campgrounds and packed hotels.

Then again, maybe not. It would reduce the resale value of our trailers to squat.

When I read that title I thought “ How they gonna set chokers with a circuit board?” Course the word mother could come into play with both circuit boards and cable chokers but that’s about it.

Speculation, logic, reason and thinking about the long term. If it is about safety AND over 40,000 people per year are dying in traffic crashes, and over half of those are innocent victims who did not "cause" the accident, why not apply safety technology to all vehicles?



The technology certainly exists. Satellite tracking does record times and locations, and can easily record speeds. My truck's built in gps shows me the speed limit of the road I am on and the instant I pass a speed limit sign with a reduction or increase in that speed limit it changes in the gps. Fail to stop for a stop sign, weave a little out of the lane, drive too far, it is all detectable.



Unlicensed or uninsured drivers a problem, not anymore. You must slip your driver's license into a slot in the dash to start the vehicle instead of using a key. The chip on your license shows proper license and insurance status, or the car won't start. Or skip that and just use biometric ID such as a thumb print or iris scan to drive the car.



OH and regarding financial responsibility. Have sufficient funds available on your credit or debit card to instantly pay the fine to the appropriate agency when a violation is detected. Run out of money, the car quits running and calls its own impound wrecker.



Wait 30 years and see how much of this happens. After all you didn't build that road.

So not just RV's but all vehicles...

Long before we get to that point, the driver will be out of the picture altogether thanks to autonomous vehicles. Shoot, you won't need a log- you can drive 24/7 and sleep on the way! Perhaps a vibrating seat will wake you up when you need to stop for gas... or hydrogen, or cow farts, or whatever is providing the energy source.

As long as we're just speculating...

On a good day I’m rolling along in the Highlander and a cup of coffee image appears on the center screen and asks me if I need to take a break. I talk to the car for a few miles and stop to take a break but it ain’t for coffee. It may be because of coffee but not for more. As far as the 30 year future I’m not too worried about it. Some snot nosed bureaucrat kid will have decided I was too old to be driving for years by then. I just hope I’m still alive, eating into his pension.

When the vehicles are autonomous, assuming that the trailer is well maintained, with balanced wheels, why not ride in the trailer? Why have a cab on the tow vehicle at all?

The FMCSA/D.O.T. only can regulate interstate commerce. If you are not in the furtherance of a commercial enterprise, you are not regulated.
