My guess:

Weight-wise, this is probably comparable to a brand new Boler 13' being towed by a 73' VW beetle. This little fiat was the Italian "people's car" and comparable in many ways.

Hi: Carol H... It's the same shape as one that was posted last year. That one was gold painted and called Golden Ei. Ei...is German for Egg.

Cool! I had a rear engine Fiat 850 spider that I needed to rebuild. I pulled the junk off, pulled the head off, and then lifted the short block out by hand. Easiest rebuild I've ever done.

PS and to think that was a larger engine than the 500! LOL!

My first car was a Fiat 500D, purchased very used in the late 60s. You are right, the 850 engine was a bit larger than the one in the 500. I had to r&r the engine twice. The first time took about 2 hours, the second time about 20 minutes. I took the engine out in one piece and was able to lift it with one hand.

BTW - did you know that you could put 10 college students in a 500, but only if you folded them just right. You also had to be a bit selective in the choice of students, no basketball or football players. By opening the sun roof you could drop in a couple extra students.

I never did try to tow anything with the 500 but had to be towed several times. Never went anywhere without a stout piece of rope.

That picture reminds me of the very optimistic East Germans I saw in Berlin. Only an optimist would put a trailer hitch on a Trabant 601.

The picture is of a later model 500. The original design had suicide doors.

I think that's a Lander Graziella Levante 300 (also here) - 3.00m (10ft) body and 4.00m (13ft) overall which has an empty weight of 355kg (780lb) and a maximum weight of 490kg (1080lb).

An original Fiat 500 has a kerb weight of about 500kg (1100lb) so that towing ratio would just be about acceptable in Europe today. But with probably 17hp from its 500cc engine, hills would not be climbed quickly......

Our tow vehicle is a Subaru Outback but dw purchased a new Cinquecento convertible in December. It would probably tow our 13 ft trillium but there's no way we could pack all our supplies in it.

Just to restart one of those European towing capacity arguments, the 500 is rated to tow a 1760 pound braked trailer in Yurp. This is for the 1.2 gas/petrol and 1.3 diesel models - surprisingly the two-cylinder 0.9 turbo gas/petrol (in the EcoBoost style) gets to tow an extra 70 pounds.
