Wow, I haven't watched the news for weeks and didn't know about any of this. Thanks for posting the thread and updates Frederick.
Gina, glad you're on the road and getting on out of there.
Hope everyone else in these areas are OK. I've always thought of the Scamp since I bought it as kind of a piece of an emergency preparedness plan for our family in case we had to evacuate. It can be ready to go quickly and gives you a shelter if evacuated. Wasn't thinking we'd see this in action though any time soon.
Be safe out there gang, and if you're in one of the affected areas, I'd follow Gina's lead and not wait until you have to go.

As former Californians and San Diegans, this is both scary & familiar, tho I never experienced fire seasons this severe! We still each have family & friends in SoCal, and all who are affeced are in our prayers.
Gina, we are glad you & da Beagles are getting out - take care & stay in touch, eh? L 'n D

Wow, this is terrible! As a former Californian who was raised in Big Bear, lived in Poway and also San Diego I am following this as closely as one can.... from Anchorage Alaska!
For those of you who may not know about this, here is the Big Bear Lake Scanner: (often informative updates on the forum there too)

Greetings from "twmervp" (The Worlds Most Expensive RV Park) in Anaheim California. This place is becoming my home away from home. The manager here actually saved 3 spots for her "Regulars" that she knew were coming down. I didn't even need to ask. So far tho, there are 4 of us here from the mountain.
I am not worried about expense, insurance will cover it on my loss of use thingy on my home owners insurance, including meals.
They did the reverse 911 in my neighborhood with voluntary evacs, but they also closed all the hiways to uphill traffic.. whats THAT tell ya? "You can leave, but ya can't come home".. arrgh.
Had I gone to work this morning, I would NOT have been able to go home to get my dogs, who think this is just another camping adventure.
So, my reason for buying this trailer has come to fruition.. it is an escape pod, and a comfy one at that. GETTING it here was a new adventure in towing.. from 5k feet down to sea level, 12 miles of windy road with gusts up to 75 mph, they are saying. I crawled down at 5-10 mph as the lead trailer in a cluster of horse trailers, RVs and other travel trailers. Cars were fine with that and politely went around. They knew.
I really am not worried about losing my house, the closest of the three fires up there is still a few miles away with the wind going AWAY from Crestline. We have the best fire crews on earth here.. I have every faith they will save our homes.
C&J, I thought about you all morning.. thinking you were off in the Casita .. ain't it grand to have such an option when it's needed???
BOB????? Bob Starr lives south of Lake Arrowhead.. I haven't been able to get ahold of him. Kurt is OK, he lives on the opposite side of the mountain.

Gina and others- Been thinking about you all day and wondering if everyone was okay. I have seen bits and pieces on the news all day but this is the first time I have been able to get to my computer. Gina, glad to hear you got out. Does not matter how much the RV park costs you and the puppies are safe. Keep us posted.

From the fire scanners (and Jack, thats one of my favorite bookmarks..)
Quote:
09:01 PM Source: scanner
Attempt to contact Batallion Chief to inform him that all homes at some unidentified location are burned to the ground. Unfortunately they did not identify the location
08:57 PM Source: scanner
Running Springs is going to get hit hard here real quick. There aren't any resources available. Making a significant run right into the back of running springs.
|
Unfortunately, thats the story here and at the other fires.. there is not enough resources.. and not due to politics, it's due to overwhelming demand. We got air tanker 910, the big DC10 for a bit this evening, but it is dark and windy and can't fly now.
The community above, and others being hit in our area, outside of the Lake Arrowhead homes (And thats not to say it's any less sad an expensive home is lost) are working class schmoes.. just like us.

Gina we're happy to hear that you didn't wait for the mandatory evacuation. Coming down your hill at normal times is hard enough, but with panic conditions, I wouldn't want to try it.
We just had our first scare. Sand Canyon and Soledad approx 2 miles from our home had a fire start at trailer park and spread so fast it jumped the freeway and headed across the wash, towards our area. The neighbors came over to be sure we knew and found us already starting to pack. So the cars are packed, Jerry has his harness on. Things have settled down... Sheriffs cars are along Sand Canyon - we guess they were expecting to evacuate us. The emergency vehicles are using our Robinson Ranch area which is just a couple of blocks from us. So we think we are pretty safe for tonight.
I'm not sleeping soundly tonight. One eye closed and one watching the TV.

For all of you who may be in jeopardy of being devoured by these wildfires, please, please, do not wait too long to evacuate ! Hook up your trailers while you still can, and leave. There is nothing you can do do stop your home from burning if you remain. We lost ours back in 2002 from the Rodeo/Chediski fires in Arizona, so please regard this post as coming from experience.
These fires can travel very fast, can reach heights of 600 ft., and burn so hot that wheels on cars will melt, aluminum on ladders also will turn to liquid. Long before that would happen, there will be smoke so dense that you will not see where the road is that you need to escape. Airborne embers will ignite whatever they touch. Devastation will happen almost instantaneously. Speaking with a hot shot fire fighter after the Chediski fire, he watched our home burn - it took less than 3 minutes to be completely gone.
Leave now, don't hang around. I pray that your home will be safe, that you will have a place to return to. That won't happen if smoke and embers envelope you. Be safe living in your eggs. Hey, we did it for 3 1/2 months. Don

I second Don's advice. Time to take a roadtrip with the egg.
The spots in the parks are going to be hard to come by and the sooner you settle in somewhere safe the better.
All of you are in our prayers.

Our prayers are with you Gina and all. After having seen all the areas mentioned on the news when we came to Gina's event, it makes it much more of a reality of what is happening. Be safe.

Glad to hear everyone is safe.
We are in the College Grove area and the nearest fire is 10-15 miles away from home but only 5 miles from the trailer in storage. The winds have calmed down some. Cal Fire was able to get air support up today. My mom was at Thousand Trails Pio Pico, near Jamul in her MH and was evacutated on Sunday night to one of the high schools. The high school has been threatened a couple of times, but the fire department is holding it. Everyone there is doing fine. My daughter and I went to donate and help at Qualcomm today and could not get in, too much traffic, too many helpers. (So San Diego)
Otay Lakes, Eastlake and Bonita are all ok. They stopped the fire before it got to homes. Only 2,000 arces burned in the Harris fire today and no structures, still over 72,000 arces overall. The Witch fire is to the north of me, but it is threating Julian and Palomar mt. now.
We are trying to stay safe. I will try to keep you all posted too.
Linda

A friend just sent the entire list of the Rancho Bernado and Rancho Santa Fe destroyed homes.
It's so sad to actually see the list.

Now there are fires on Camp Pendleton on Both Sides of Interstate 5. A back fire attempt went horribly wrong. I feel so bad for the firefighters. The freeway is closed between State Highway 76 and Christianitos Road in Orange County. Interstate 15 has reopened, and in now the only way out heading North.
Our plans of coming to Lake Casitas are touch and go...
