Welp, it's official. I've got gold fever. And we'll soon be headed for Colorado to strike it rich.

Each year I try.

Each year I fail.

But there's always the next time.

Pam and I hike up into the mountains, following my guide book to the slag piles of old gold mines, to gold-ladened, fast-rushing cold mountain streams.

Oh sure, millions and millions of dollars have already been extracted by the mines ... mines that closed long, long ago.

But that doesn't mean they didn't miss a nugget or two. Or maybe a vein of pure gold uncovered by the receding ice and snow.

I have an old gold pan ... that's accompanied us to Colorado for years. I always carry it in the Suburban ... because you never know when I might strike it rich!

(Actually the gold pan ... a real gold pan ... doubles as Maggie Mutt's water dish when I'm not out prospecting)

Yeah, you go ahead and laugh.

But don't come around begging for a new trailer or a set of wheels after I strike it rich.

He who laughs last laughs best.

And besides, what better way to spend an afternoon in the mountains ... in an isolated, peaceful setting, chasing a dream.

As I said, I've got gold fever.

I catch it every year.

And there's only one thing that can itch it ...

And that's panning up a scoop of river gravel, then carefully shaking it back out (the trick is in the wrist) ... hoping, praying to see something gleaming in the mountain sunshine.

I know a school teacher that journeys to Idaho each summer to work her hard rock gold mine. She claims she brings back about $10,000 each summer though she admits the work is very hard.

I'm a sucker for a rockhounding book ... also have several guides to Colorado minerals. But we really sincerely like to hike up to old gold mines in the Colorado mountains ... and just spend a day playing around.

Maggie Mutt had a backpack, in which she carries various supplies (including the gold pan), for me.

Pam carries the sandwiches, etc, in a backpack ... we tried to have Maggie Mutt carry the sandwiches ... but she'd just run around in circles trying to nip open her backpack.

So Charles, if Maggie is carrying the pan and Pam is carrying lunch, what does that leave for you to carry? But seriously, i have enjoyed many backaches and sunburns for a few flakes of the stuff too. We plan to do a little panning in southern Oregon on our vacation in July. I've only panned in the California gold country so I hope I didn't get too spoiled with pretty good luck. Enjoy Colorado, it's a wonderful place for deer hunting too.

Charles and Pam,

Now even though we've never met in person, you know we are really your best friends. After all, we even live in Aurora, Colorado and you could think of us as your ''base camp''. Not that we would expect you to remember us when you strike it rich. Good luck and we hope you give us a call. The Gold fever is very real and I'm starting to '' vibrate '' a little about it myself. I wonder if my Metal Detectors will work up there?

Keith ... sure I'll be your best friend. Come campin' with me. I'll be the one with the smile on his face, campin' in the high country.

Pete ... have no fear, if I don't strike it rich, I'll try to steal someone's generator. Did you know that our webmaster Michael often doesn't lock his generator box at night? I know. I checked.

John ... I'm retired. I don't do work. That's why I have a wife and dog. :) :)

Simon was a 3 legged German Shepherd mix that shared his 14 years with us. He was always ready to go for a hike on the beach, down a trail, or to a new swimming hole. As he got older, as often as not I would end up carrying him back like a small child when he tuckered out. He was a real special dog. It's amazing how Charles' post brought back those memories.
