GPS use in 2 states

I was just browsing through my GPS manual and found something that many folks may not realize, at least I didn't.


SPECIAL NOTE REGARDING DRIVING IN CALIFORNIA AND MINNESOTA


California Vehicle Code Section 26708 (a) (1) provides that "No persons shall
drive any motor vehicle with an object or material placed, displayed, installed,
affixed or applied upon the windshield or side or rear windows." Drivers in
California should not use a suction mount on their windshield, side or rear
windows.
Note: this section of the California Vehicle Code applies to anyone driving in
California, not just California residents.


Minnesota State Legislature Statutes Section 169.71, subdivision 1, section 2
provides that "A person shall not drive or operate with any objects suspended
between the driver and the windshield other than sun visors and rearview
mirrors and electronic toll collection devices."
Note: this Minnesota Stature applies to anyone driving in Minnesota, not just
Minnesota residents.

I have no idea how us traveling folks are supposed to know all the rules and regulations of our own states much less in everyone elses. Yesterday I read about a poor sucker who legally bought guns while living in Colorado and moved to NJ to be nearer his kids and got stopped by the law when he had 2 rifles in his trunk both unloaded and trigger locked and he got 7 years in prison because NJ laws were different than Colorado's.He evidently also had a permit to carry firearms. any way we may want to check closer on some of these matters before we leave home for a biggie

I had a friend who got a ticket for an airfreshner in Idaho. And in some states, a cased gun is considered a concealed weapon.

City stickers, required to be attached to the windshield would meet this criteria.... Catch 22?
I attach my GPS to my sunroof,legal in CA, iffy in MN?

Apparently the inside rearview mirror would be illegal in CA not to mention standard parking permits!
Also odd...consider that rear and rear side windows can be painted or replaced with sheetmetal as long as you have both outside rearview mirrors.

Oh well it's California, what can you expect?

The last I heard or read CA modified this a bit. There's a small section of the windshield on each side that you can attach a GPS. I don't remember the exact locations, but there is very bottom corner with one area small than the other. I think it can be found on line.

I solved the problem with bean bag type of mounting good in both states.

People with firearms have to be particularly careful when visiting other states. Even if the states have reciprocal agreements for weapons permits, the rules vary concerning how, where, and when you can carry (etc.). California has some particularly "strange" rules; A TV report showed a young girl who was practicing for the Olympics as a target shooter, had to go to Nevada to practice with her .22 (short) rifle because it wasn't allowed in California. The Cowboy Action Shooters (SASS), moved their big annual event from California partly because under California law many of their lever action cowboy guns were illegal because they held more than ten cartridges - they were considered assault weapons!

They make GPS mounts that affix the unit to the air vents.

We gotta have rules to protect the rest of us from idiots. Unfortunately, idiots are making the rules. One forth of the view out my windshield is of the hood and body covering the wheels. I can stack it on the dash as high as I want, but I can't have a vertical string, wire, or cord from the top of the windshield.

There is a Federal law that allows transporting a weapon safe from local arrest while traveling through States. Once you stop overnight, the rules change. Non-Resident Concealed Carry permits can protect you and make you legal in many States.
